Why a lot of the Escapist community is more mindless than they think.

I play the games I like and don't play the games I don't. Yes I backed Wasteland 2 as well as many other projects on Kickstarter. Why? because I wanted to. I liked what they had to say and felt that it was a worthwhile investment. I never played the original but decided that I had enough interest in this to plunk down enough money to get a copy of the game when it releases. I don't care how hardcore it might or might not be. I just want something to entertain me for more than the few hours worth of content they put in the actual game.

I rip into CoD because it's a dead horse to me. I don't care if other people play the series it's their choice. To me (since I'm a PC gamer) I refuse to pay 60 bucks for only four hours of content since the multiplayer side is a total hacker fest and I will not subject myself to the aggravation it causes.

As for MY little pony and other games of that nature I won't rip into someone if they talk about it. Why? One I have a 2 year old daughter that will (when I let her play on the computer) will probably LOVE it. Two if someone wants to play/discuss a game like that well more power to them.

A well-written topic, my friend. I don't necessarily agree with EVERYTHING, but well-written, none the less.

I don't really have any sort of opinion on Wasteland. Never played it, and (unless I see something to change my mind) I have no intention of playing Wasteland 2. That being said, I can sort of see why someone would donate to a game like this. They really, really want to see a sequel to something they like, and what better way to show support than with the one thing that developers are DEFINITELY going to respond to: money.

As for COD, I'm not a fan. At all. I skipped Modern Warfare, and I picked of MW2 out of curiousity. Didn't like it AT ALL. But it doesn't seem like a poorly-designed game. Not only that, but alot of the people that hate on it probably have NO investment in the series anyways. Maybe it's just trendy to hate COD or something.

Now, My Little Pony... I'm a fan. Huge fan. Absolutely a brony. And really, I agree that MLP threads really, REALLY get torn down around here, for NO good reason, too. Common arguments seem to be:

There's already a TON of MLP threads, we don't need more. Really, I might have agreed with this argument at one time, but frankly, it isn't true anymore. MLP threads are fairly uncommon nowadays, and most normal discussion is kept to the group. Which brings me to my next argument:

You guys have a usergroup for this, why don't you use it? Anyone who uses this argument probably doesn't use the chatrooms in the Escapist very often. They're simply not tailored for discussing single topics easily. If I have a specific topic I want to discuss, then I have to ask the question, and HOPE that the vast majority of people currently chatting feel like talking about it too, or else my question immediately gets booted off the first page. And even then, anyone who enters the chatroom AFTER I ask the question might have no idea what's even being asked.

The normal forums are simply better for having structured discussions on a single topic. That's kinda what they're THERE for. Plus, there's anime usergroups, usergroups for specific games, even a Yahtzee usergroup (which is still larger than the MLP group). Are you saying that THEY can't make any topics, as well? Another argument:

This is a gaming website, not a MLP website. This one is slightly confusing. I've never SEEN a MLP topic posted in the Gaming Discussion area. It's always in Off-Topic. Which is, you know, the area FOR discussing things that aren't gaming-related.

Now, I'm not saying that people CAN'T voice their disapproval of MLP. You don't like it, fine. That's your opinion. But why intrude on MLP topics, just to say that? I don't like to use this word, but I can't think of any other way to describe it: it's trolling. If I entered every Mass Effect thread I saw and posted saying "I'm sick of seeing Mass Effect threads, why don't you all make a usergroup and keep to yourselves!", that's what I'd get labeled as.

Dismissing the entire community as mindless is a bit much, mate.
I have never dissed bronies. Granted, i don't understand them, and don't understand the appeal of the show, but I just because I don't derive enjoyment out of it doesn't mean other people don't.
Same with CoD. I get a little bit angry when people admit they don't actually know if they like it or not, and just play it because everyone else does, but that's more rage against the heavens than anything else.

Undoubtedly there are people like you describe out there, but the whole community? No. The majority of the Escapist that I have encountered have been nice, friendly folk. Yes, CoD and MLP can attract people being assholes, but that comes down to a lack of understanding, I feel. A lot of people don't understand what people see in CoD. It confuses them. And when something confuses them, they tend to lash out against it. Specifically, people who play it. MLP is something entirely different. I think we can all agree that the animation is fantastic, and the writing is above-average (if more than a little internet baiting). What people don't understand is why people devote their entire internet image to it. That's just us being idiots! We don't understand! We are unworthy!

I know its not much consolation, but the next time you are bashed for liking CoD or MLP, just don a top hat, drink a cup of tea, and laugh at the people who don't understand. Trust me! I've been doing it for YEARS regarding Obsidian's entire catalog of games!

The Top Hat and tea are optional. But encouraged.

The internet. Welcome to it.

Seriously forums have been like this since the early 90's and as far as I'm concerned they always will be. People have opinions, and they like to be aggressive with said opinions. People also like things, and dislike other things...

Perhaps you were more specifically concerned with the Escapist community because the general attitude is that we're some sort of bastion of nerd-intellect that must never be tainted by the likes of /b/ronies and the like. The truth of the matter is we're a community full of positives and negatives and from year to year our general user base changes just as the trends do.

P.S: As for COD being well made, that's a whole other topic which I won't even get into here.

Yet you still donated because of the hope that you might get basically the exact same Wasteland game, just with better graphics. You probably don't want it to change, or get more streamlined, or become easier, or reach out to a bigger audience because YOU want it to be a hardcore RPG. Even if it means that noone will buy Wasteland 2 because it's so hard and out dated with today's standards because it needs to be exactly what every RPG was like in the 80's.
Congratulations, you just outlined why Wasteland 2 got funded on Kickstarter. It's the type of game that publishers wouldn't touch because it doesn't fit the model of what currently sells well, so fans of the original have pitched in because they'd like to see more of that style of play.
It doesn't affect you, so simply leave it be as a good thing.

Here's probably the one going to start the biggest flame war. The issue of Call of Duty. Basically, any mention of Call of Duty in a positive light here is always torn down and beaten to death by the exact same arguments, the ones about COD being the same game and Activision being puppy killing nazi's. Whereas Call of Duty IS the most popular game series on the planet, it's popular because it IS a good game that a lot of people want to play. Just those people aren't as vocal as the people who hate COD, it's the classic case of a vocal minority vs a quiet majority. If you hate COD you're just like all of the people you are calling mindless by liking cod, you are hating on something because it's popular and it's not what you like. You don't have to bother with COD, COD threads or even talk to COD fans. Yet you still post everywhere that COD is like a cancer, or it's shit and all of that and you STILL tear down every COD fan who dares to post in a thread with endless quotes.
Call of Duty is re-released very frequently with little change made to the formula, when its previous iterations could simply have been maintained. This forces those who want to play online to buy a new copy, as the previous iteration becomes a graveyard very fast. It is for this reason that CoD gains a poor reputation, and simply taking the time to acknowledge that can make you seem like less of a fanboy. The games themselves can still be good, and you can defend the gameplay all you like (I personally enjoy them), but it's very difficult to defend such an exploitative release schedule.

Not being afraid to touch on some more taboo subjects here! Yes, I'm talking about Bronies and My Little Pony. Mainly the fact that EVERY thread about ponies that's positive and is basically for bronies to discuss things about the show is always torn down by people whining that we are shoving it down their throats. You did not have to click on the thread titled "Who is you're favorite pony?" or "What are your thoughts on season 2 of MLP" if you hate bronies and ponies so much. Yet you still did out of irrational hate and disgust of something you don't like. Then you are basically making it so it's an unofficial rule that bronies can't make threads about MLP because we would be shoving it down your precious little throats. One more point is that there are MORE threads coming from non bronies about MLP than threads coming from actual bronies. They're normally about "What is this MLP thing?" or "What are your thoughts on bronies?" which are two threads a brony would never make.
Generalising about those who dislike a show is just as bad as those who generalise about those who like a show. I will say no more.

So Escapist, what do you think of this opinion? Do you agree, or am I a 13 year old kid who just likes to play COD all day (I am 13 btw).
Good for you, being thirteen - you still have time left in school to learn proper grammar. I also think your opinions are slightly hyperbolic, but that's fair enough at your age.

What is wrong with me wanting to give money to one of my favourite figures in the videogame industry, Brian Fargo, with his word that he's going to put it to work making the sequel to a game I really enjoyed?

You just strike me as a pissed off bronie who can't accept a few jokes and insults from the internet. The internet is not your friend, and I don't know where you or anyone else gets this notion of the Escapist community being some intellectual light in a stupid dark world. It's a forum, and it has a cross-section of people, some more worth talking to than others, just like any other forum.

Eh, never played Wasteland, never really got into CoD, and tried watching a couple of MLP episodes, but it didn't do much.
And what do you mean with how we supposedly look down on those who like modern RPGs? Every Bethesda game made in the last decade has a huge following, as does the Mass Effect series, despite what the threads a few weeks ago might have indicated.

1) Pretty much everyone on here either loves or hasn't played "Wasteland". Which is a 20 year old, no sound, hardly any graphics hardcore RPG. It was made by Interplay, who have now shut down due to a MASS of stupid mistakes. Now, 20 years later the original developers (not sure though) have made a kickstarter fund for Wasteland 2. I bet a LOT of people from here donated to that. Yet, you haven't seen any gameplay, any concept art, and indication of what it shall look like, any info other than "It's wasteland 2!" and you are riding on the hope that Interplay is as good as it was, which is highly unlikely.
I admit to never play Wasteland but I know gaming history and that Wasteland lead to the Fallout series so that grabbed my attention, especially when it was announced that Chris Avellone might come on board. Hence I donated.

YAY! GENERALISING!

I support Wasteland 2 in spirit, because I have loved everything from the developers, but I'm not forking over money for something I know nothing about.

To be honest, I hardly ever see anybody complaining about CoD or MLP, in fact, I more often see people doing what you are doing, and complaining about the people who complain.

Well, that's kind of the point, isn't it?
A game that couldn't otherwise have been made because it wouldn't sell, is being funded by a bunch of hardcore gamers who want that kind of game.
It doesn't have to sell well. The budget is there, the developers will get paid, the gamers will get their game, all will be resolved.
What's the problem with that?

It isn't an exact re-make, and was never billed as one. It's a modern, non-linear, writing-heavy RPG with tactical turn-based combat (think Jagged Alliance or Final Fantasy Tactics) made by people who are good at making RPGs. Some people think that's worth preordering and/or throwing money at. It's nothing to get mad about.

If the Escapist is good at anything, it's making you believe you're wrong. It's a great way to learn, even if those correcting you aren't very...polite about it.

I've stuck around for around for a few years, and trust me. You get used to both debating, and correcting yourself. If you don't like being wrong, well...sorry.
