I can't figure out the appeal here. I guess for those with a real need for a tablet PC it's cool. Beyond that...maybe I'm missing something.

There are already open faced computers on the market and they never really caught off. Without a physical keyboard and standard modem (I heard you need to pay more for the 3G sim addition), I doubt this will take off outside of the Apple fangroups, who I wish would really just die off already.

take it from me, a windows user- corporations produce crap, and you should expect that.

apple products are overhyped and overpriced anyway.

Seriously, who the fuck cares? If you don't like it, don't buy it.
but plenty of people will buy it, just because it's shiny, new, overhyped apple tech. the problem is that this is an example of how the company is mercilessly taking advantage of their dedicated fanbase for their own profit. people will buy it, show it to all their friends, realize that it's an ipod touch without the portability, and leave it on the coffee table, trying to convince themselves that it wasn't a waste of money.

oh, and a crippling technical flaw will be discovered soon after the launch that renders the entire first generation useless. just calling that one now.
I really couldn't have put it better myself. My entire music class has been talking about this thing for weeks, pretending that this is some kind of new innovation.

This isn't the first tablet PC, people.

Oh well, didn't plan on buying one anyways. I do like my iPod, I'll give Apple that.

Since when has apple made anything useful that isn't an iPod?
since when has apple made anything useful -PERIOD?

the ipod is just an overpriced mp3 player that you have to BUY music for. it costs 3 times more than the mp3 player i got and mine is much better.

but somehow owning an ipod is "cool".
that's the only reason their stuff sells at all.

Meh, I have an iPod touch and I enjoy all its functions. Most other products fail or are so simple they are marketed towards retards.

If people care enough to discuss it then don't be a jackass and tell them they shouldn't discuss it. Even if it is negative. This is what forums are for. If you don't like that fact that people have negative views on something then why the why bother telling them off. If you don't like their discussion, don't jump in.
QFT! You tell him what's what!

OT: Meh. I didn't see anything special about it. If anything it looked a bit lame. Oh well. You just know that there are going to be a nice lineup of people camping outside the Apple stores a few days before the release.

Yeah, after mp3 players became popular and didn't have shit storage space. Like it or not, the iPod was what put mp3 players on the map and gave manufacturers a reason to make them not suck.

Also what's this "it only sells because it's cool" crap you're spouting? There are actual people buying their stuff, not shutter shade-wearing, Starbucks-drinking, indie music-loving hipsters. It's only natural that the most popular mp3 player would be the iPod, what with it stimulating the mp3 player industry. It was the first to make people give a shit about them, and it took too long for anybody else to put out a product just as good (if not, better) than the iPod or had insufficient advertising to compete with it when it first came out.

This seems to me to be a netbook that you can't do work on; all it's good for is screwing around on the internet. It'll be inferior to my laptop because it doesn't have a proper keyboard, inferior to my Kindle because of a backlit screen and more expensive ebooks (and paid 3G), inferior to my PSP for all things gaming and inferior to my iphone because it doesn't make calls (or take pictures). Are people going to be willing to shell out $500 (or more) for second rate version of all of these platforms?

(sigh) Knowing Apple, the answer is probably, "Yes."

It's simple, apple can already get away with charging a ridiculous amount of money for a lower end laptop with a proprietary OS, and banking that their other products will be bought simply because everyone else has one so you don't want to feel left out. So, this is just another way to make money. Don't like it? Don't buy it, I don't.

Sadly, you're right. There will be people camping to be the first to own the "Big Daddy iPod Touch". And both of them will try and convince themselves that the only thing that new is the fact that it can be used as a coffee table.

So Apple.....will this thing have flash support?

The appeal is the processor 1GHz, 10 hour battery, weight (1.5,6 pounds) and oddly low price at £260.
Also there's the idea of truly portable word processing, no-one likes typing on a blackberry or iphone, no likes carrying a laptop around, an iPad (I preferred the prototype rumor name iProd btw) will be for businesspeople, and students, it's the right price and portability.
I'd get one if i had £260 lying around

what about netbooks? you could get a new dell mini 10 with a 10 inch screen, windows 7, and a 3G connection (on at&t, verizon, or sprint) for around $450. ($400 for windows xp)

EDIT: and 1.6ghz processor
