You're quoting Xbox titles, which is an Eastern console. More specifically, American. Meaning American voice actors, meaning American accents.

Then some of them are made in Australia, so Australian accents. They didn't go LOOK for an American, if that's what you're thinking.

Most games are made in Japan and the USA. In Japan, when games are localised for Western release they usually release to America first, or work with US based offices and publishers and so on to release in the Western World. Hence it's easier to find American voice actors. In the US, games are again made with local voice actors because it's easier and cheaper than hopping on a plane to the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Abkhazia or wherever the hell, simply to find voice actors. If you'll notice, most games made by other countries have characters with local accents (just a quick example, Fable was made by a British company, Lionhead, and all the voice actors are British. Coincidence? I think not...). Plus, games set in a particular country with characters of a particular nationality almost always use voice actors who either are that nationality or can put on a good accent. It's got nothing to do with American arrogance or ignorance (I'm saying that and I'm British and outspoken against American arrogance. That should tell you this point is pretty true and valid...).

Lol the Australians in Halo were probably supposed to be British! I have been asked so many times if I am an Australian despite my clear estuary english accent...

I don't even notice it, however have you considered the alternatives? Brummie elites in Halo 3? Glaswegian Khajit? How about if Riddick had a west country accent?

Anyway, you're forgetting COD 4. You spend half that game being english...
riddick having a west country accent would be the single greatest thing in the history of the earth.
oh man that's got me cracking up

How about Jean-Luc Picard?
Better question, why do people ask questions they already fucking know the answer to?

The heroes of most games are American, because Americans are amazing. Every single one is brilliant, cultured, tough-as-nails, and capable of slaughtering hordes of invading aliens with nothing more than a toothpick, a paperclip and 27 cents.

It's a given that games developed in America will make America the center of every future Earth. Japanese culture does the same for itself (see Code Geass or many other animes where the future of Earth is determined on the soil of Japan) except when dealing primarily with a Western audience (which, by the way, is quite a rare situation for them).

However, I must say my patience is wearing thin concerning American protagonists as well. I'd like to see a serious, next-gen game set in Australia, minus all the more stupid clichés. We're like America, only we have a slightly different accent, and we're England, except without much arrogance and with some extra toughness inset in the culture. We don't actually often say "mate", except to stupid tourists who expect it, most of us don't learn boy scout-like survival tactics, and again very few of us wear cowboy hats like Dundee - GET IT RIGHT. Our country is like 60% desert, though we mostly ignore those areas.

Sounds like the perfect middle ground for a fictional WWVIII to me, except there is one thing Australia realistically lacks - power. However, we could gain it in such a large timespan. Remember that board game Risk? Get Australia and you win. There's a reason for that. No one pays attention to us and we very, very slowly build up, while America and the other big countries waste their tough people on pointless wars. We contribute, but we're hardly losing the majority of our defence force over it.

Has anybody thought about why Halo 3 is set in Kenya yet there's not an African in sight? Even the factory workers in Voi in the Storm are white.

I have an accent? I always thought an American accent was just a more neutral way of talking. Maybe that's why alot of characters seem to have the accent.

Hey and dont slag Glaswegians I am one
Guh, if there was a game like Halo or Gears of War with a Glaswegian lead, the whole game would be over in the space of a minute, as the principal character cuts through the entire alien force singlehandedly. Cos we're that hard, obviously :p

Though I suppose for now we'll have to make do with games like Fable 2 and the Demoman from TF2 until they make GTA : Glasgow. Though it would probably more likely be GTA : Edinburgh...:p

In most games why do the main characters talk with an American accent? The Halo games(with exception to Australians), Gears Of War, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Chronicles of Riddick the list goes on. Even the side characters talk, mostly, like Americans or with some sort of American lilt. I know alot of developers and publishers are American but goddamn can't we have the Russia equivelent of Master Chief.

It's like America conquers earth and makes everyone on earth American apart from the Australians who they deem worthy to go into space with them. I understand but it would be nice for some other English speaking heroes or even ones with strange accents.
Because no one would play Halo if Master Chief was a Yam Yam or a Brummie.

I should point out that there's no such thing as a 'lack of accent.' Anyone who speaks a language has an accent. English alone has Canadian English, American English, UK English, and probably others that I can't think of off the top of my head. Irish English maybe?
Yes Ireland alone has about 20 accents... And I laughed at the people saying "American's don't have accents".

They are all American games, made in America. Developers want voice actors for their games, they look in their own country. Makes sense, cheaper to fly someone from New Hampshire to Seattle than to get from from London. It's not so much a matter of American dominance in future history as American dominance in current game development.

That said, the 'accented' soldiers in halo were really annoying. I'd rather have a non- accented soldier than one who makes a big deal about having an ethnic bend.

Americans like to pretend they are the heroes of the world solving all the problems instead of the thing causing them.
