I don't quite understand the avid, pointless patriotism. But I believe the older folks here haven't quite realized that World War 2 and the Cold War are over. As soon as our generation becomes dominant in the population, this will die out.

Oh, that's good. Is that actually the way the saying goes? Because I've never heard it that way, even though it's a lot better. I'm going to remember that.

Also...

Let them have their patriotism.

Their country is still new, they still have time to do a few more war crimes, maybe colonise some places, kill the natives etc.

You're only young once.

Yes, quite.
Somehow, you always manage to say precisely what needs to be said in the funniest way possible.

We should start a Daystar fan club!

>_>

Wait, no, that's not what I meant... that's creepy... we should definitely not.

Um... I'm gonna go now. *scampers off awkwardly*
I expect royalties from this 'fan club'.

I won't put my face on a t-shirt for less than 75 percent.

American Patriotism is taught to children from an early age, in both the family and in public schools.

I'm an American, and what they're doing here is essentially brainwashing.

If you're over here, and you think we shouldn't be a union of 50 states, like I do, you're regarded as a traitor.
Hardly. Some of the Republican presidential candidates believe Lincoln should have let the Confederacy secede.

Look guys (and girls), I live in a country that is (politically) about 18 years old. Historically, we've been around from 7th century. We are still recovering from the last war and genocides in Europe. (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslav_Wars and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakup_of_Yugoslavia )
And I can't understand the point of *any* patriotism. It was patriotism that started most (if not all) wars in the human history. Because of Serbian and ours (Croatian) patriotism I was forced to grow up in a country that was (and still paritally is) based on coruption and hegemony. I just can't see the point of it.
And I've been to America during this summer and while (like previous posts have pointed out), most Americans just don't bother with it, the things we see (patriotism and such) as outsiders portray US as a very different nation than it actually is.

the under god part is somewhat funny:
During the cold war Americans believed that the Russian government was telling its people that the government was equal to the religion. So basically its a way of saying that the government will not oppress your religions views like those darn Communist.
Really? I thought it was Christian lobbyists that got that put in. (link to wikipedia)

Where did you hear your version? Just curious =)
one of those old propaganda PSA oddly enough
sorry cant find it for you as the name escapes me and youtube side links are not helping

Ego, we meet again. Let's just say some people get more defensive over such matters than others. Ego wars are a massive trouble though.

lol, you know whats funny? The fact that that I see time and time again, English escapist (not all mind you, but a fare share) typing how much America sucks and giving their opinions on domestic American problems and yet when the tables are turned, all of a sudden the response is that because I'm American, your response becomes "your an outsider, so you don't understand and you don't have a right to state an opinion on the subject".
This thread is a perfect example of how non-Americans type about domestic American issues. You know what my response to them is? To look at what they have to say REGARDLESS of their nationality.
Sorry but when am I constanly bashing America? and yes I am right, the situation in NI is very complex and your (clearly biased) view means you shouldn't bother commenting on the matter.
I pointed out that I didn't mean everybody and that I was generalizing. Also, I'm glad that you think your right, I guess somebody has to.

Don't tell me what to comment on

Relax, I think Volf is just backtracking, he knows he's lost the arguement and is probably trying to declare most of his posts as ''miscommunications'' before someone reports him for having next to no clue about what he's talking about (at least I LIVE in Northern Ireland and so have some say in the conversation)

Because we're fed crap about how our country is God's greatest gift to mankind from the age of two. We get patriotism shoved down our throat before we're able to make our own decisions. That's why we're so patriotic. Because we're told to be.

And that's also a huge reason why all countries are patriotic. Because they're told to be from a young age. We just get told sooner and more vigorously than most.

Britain is more patriotic, according to surveys.

Citizens of superpowers and former superpowers have a lot of pride. Does this really need a topic?

MelasZepheos said:
Sorry, should also point out how it's not really 'true' patriotism, it's more like nationalism. That whole jingoistic 'my country tis of thee' stuff that rednecks and Republicans spout isn't patriotism. Captain America patriotism is very different 'I am loyal to nothing, except the American dream.' Not cultural boundaries, not nationalist pride, but the dream of a free country where people are judged on the merits of their character and their actions instead of the luck of their birth or their choice of religion or partner or anything else.

Nationalism is 'my country, right or wrong.'
Patriotism is 'My country right or wrong, if right to be kept right, if wrong to be set right.'

So many so-called patriots forget the second half of that sentence.
This annoys me. I don't disagree with your sentiment, but you aren't actually using the meanings of the words.

The notion that patriotism is love of your country and nationalism is aggressive jingoism or supremacism is flat-out wrong. It's using the current connotations of words rather than the actual definitions.

Patriotism can't exist without nationalism. Nationalism is the belief that your national group is unique and ought to have its own independent state. Patriotism is a just a nice way of describing nationalistic feeling in a country that already exists.

So yeah, I'm a nationalist. I think Americans are a specific group of people that are distinct from other people, and I think they should continue to inhabit a state with the borders that currently exist.

True patriotism is kicking your government in the balls when it does stupid shit.
Not waving your flag while being obnoxious.

I know that my friend who moved to Texas says he has to sing the National Anthem every morning at high school. I find it amazing that...that many people can care so much for their country. It is a true and noble trait that can bring the whole nation together. Unfortunately, there are many obstacles in the way that stop it from doing that, but maybe someday it will pay off even more. Right now, loyalty to the United States of America can actually negatively impact you because of the partial corruption in the government. What a shame.

They're not any more patriotic than say, England, or other Western countries. The only difference is that Americans have much more to brag about. But I will say this: there are more people in America who vehemently condemn their nation than in almost any other country - I don't really know what its like in China.

Technically the U.S. is one of the world's oldest countries, comparing favorably to most of Europe.

Edit: And my captcha called for Cyrillic characters. I have a Cyrillic keyboard installed but still, fuck you.

it might be just an unfair stereotype, but it's generally believed that if you badmouth america, any nearby americans will go up in arms and get very angry, and i'm just wondering why. Just to clarify, i have nothing against america, but i hardly think it's anything to write home about. and don't say that anyone would be that way about their home country, because if someone came up to be and said "hey, england's crap!" i'd just say "yeah, it is a bit"
A Smart American shouldn't care. A dumb American will most likely call you a dumbass ****** retard.

Kind of like if you say anything in XBL

And what about the patriotism from WWI or WWII that's how those two escalated so far
