When it comes to sex Americans aren't so much prudes as intensely private about their sex lives.

Remember, they are the largest producers and consumer of porn, they just don't like to have that flaunted around in public and it's something I agree with.

I came to the conclusion a large part of it was lobbying.

I watched a US show in which a guy has his back blow torched (graphically) in the same episode a pair of tits are fuzzed out.

Is there a single fucking person who would happily sit through the violence who would then be offended by some tits?

People are complaining about guys kissing in the Walking Dead, and that it means kids shouldn't be allowed to watch that show.

I'm not really sure why it happens, but I know I get prudish if I spend too long in the bathtub.

Maybe America needs to take more showers.

Could you give me a link? I had a Google and could see lots of articles talking about outrage but little examples of actual outraged people and those that I did see were just your usual homophobic arseholes. Nobody was saying "think of the children".

While I agree that people having a problem with a gay kiss and not graphic violence is fucked up it's a different kind of fucked up from what I am talking about.

Unfortunately not, I read it in a Buzzfeed article, but checking it again it was someone responding to someone else bringing kids up, and the original isn't given.

To understand why Americans are prudish its important to understand history. the pioneers that settled the "wild west" were mostly of two types. profiteering investors and social rejects in at that time current european culture. Due to when it happened, a lot of those social rejects happened to be overly religiuos people. this is especially noticable with the formation of "bible belt". thus there was very high amount of religiuos beliefs instilled into society in US as a whole, which has remained to this day. This is also why US is the most religious OECD country

as you are aware, most religions are quite prudish.

ironically, US is also one of the most sex-obsessed country, possibly due to the prudishness to begin with.

I imagine most of our differences from our European cousins came to be due to an entire ocean between us. In the modern internet age, I'm sure we're about to see generational differences. If only schools were willing to begin phasing out that pesky Imperial system.

That may be a big part of the differences between Americans and Europeans, but I don't think it entirely explains things in and of itself given how the same gap exists between Canada and the US.

Because, we like to feed off of the flesh of Virgins. That's the source of our power. But how are we supposed to feed off of the flesh of virgins if the kids are fucking everywhere? Therefore, it's necessary to push abstinence in schools. We can then use this flesh to fuel our militaries, and use our love of violence to bomb your cities.
Dibs on the script for a movie version of this.

Boy there's a lot of hateful stereotyping going on in this thread!

That the religious, particularly protestant christians, think sex is evil is a common misconception I hope I can address and maybe educate a few people on. Most denominations of Christianity regard sex and sexuality as a very good and even holy thing, but that it is sadly something all too commonly abused and corrupted.

The religious tend to look at the popular culture as having a rampant problem with the misuse of sex, not that sex itself is the problem. I hope that makes sense. I hate using analogies as people tend to attack the accuracy of the metaphor rather than the message it tries to convey.
Thank you for posting that. I'll second it. There's absolutely no problem with sex in Christianity. After all, God did create male and female, there is a reason for that. But when sex is misused/abused, it can and does harm people.

I struggle to think of a movie in when a sex scene reflected the genuineness of the relationship. Nearly all the time, it's tacked on, just to grab attention. Which isn't how it should be.

I don't know about all of Canada, but Canadian relatives who come to visit don't seem to be all that different from relatives from Minnesota who visit.
