Why are FPS falling into categories?

I've been having this dilemma for some time, and I'm certain it has been discussed before, but EVERY SINGLE TIME I'm gleefully playing CoD4 on my 360 and suddenly feel like a change, I turn to my Halo 3. Then I have some more fun, until the moment comes and I have to play something else. So there I go, down the street to ask my friend for GoW, and after a session of brutality, I get back home and star playing that, only to find out that I just played that ten minutes ago (although, of course, Halo 3 lags less). So then, I get out my ram and go to another friends house to have a go at his sparkling CoD WaW, only to realize that I played exactly the same thing just an hour ago. After that, I feel sad and abandoned and go play Rock Band. And I realize I'm just playing Guitar Hero with the circular notes substituted by Arkanoid Bars.

My point is, inside the genres, FPS titles are starting to look too much alike, and even though I know that I'm a poor, grieving spaniard, and that I haven't bought games in too much time (I'm open to (POLITE) suggestions on buying FPS titles), I'm starting to regretfully think a little bit like Yahtzee, and that developers are making games just to please the fans.
And I, as a fan, am not pleased, so either they are too obsessed with repeating the same ideas over and over again, or perhaps we should try making them go through the process of indiefication, that is, to stop buying their games so that the same desperation and sheer man eating hunger makes them come up with ANYTHING midly original.

I feel as if I'm sitting on the Titanic and someone is pointing out that perhaps that iceberg hitting us will be a problem.

Yeah, games may be becoming too similar to each other, with the constant churning out of sequels and copycat games hoping to ride the wave of success and money that has been surrounding the Halo and CoD series.

In other news, the sun may be producing heat.

I reckon Mr hypothetical is right. If you want something that is different, you should go for Mirrors Edge. Its like the awesome classic, Another World, only its 3D. But you die as often, but it is still fun. Dice and EA really did something fantastic there.

Hehe nice; that probably made my hour.

Uhm FPS in categories? Hasn't that always been the case?

As for suggestions try "Mass Effect" which is shooter/rpg or "earth defense force 2017" which is basically an arcade style pick 2 weapons pick one of 50 missions, pick your difficulty and then kill everything that moves that isn't human. EDF is a seriously addictive game theres no real thought out story line its based in various areas in Japan where alien invaders are attacking, these alien invaders take the form of massive insects, robots and even a few Godzilla wannabees. The controls are simplistic, your squad all sound like they are voiced by the same person and if you play on hard, hardest or inferno this game will serious hand you your ass. Its old school arcade fun (bend you over and rob your money stylie). Also its an old game and probably bargain bin by now.

Forgot to point out both of my suggestions are third person shooters not first person but you sounded like you wanted a change

Left 4 Dead is a pretty unique experience but generally speaking FPSs are susceptible to it because they almost by default require war.

We could do with a few more out of the box titles like Painkiller and Serious Sam, not so much in game style but in concepts and light heartedness.

I naturally like Genero the Badass Space Marine but I'm a simple man of simple pleasures. But the proverbial needs a good push. I don't rate Fenix and Chief alongside Denton and Freeman, or even Sam!

Anything mildly original? FPS?

Perhaps give The Ship a try.

An FPS with elements from The Sims plus a bizarre array of weapons makes for a unique experience.

It's cheap as chips on Steam now. You can also check out their website:

I don't think there's help for you, not if you're considering Gears of War the equivalent of Halo.

If two such dissimilar shooters strike you as nearly identical then I don't think you'll find any shooter to be "original."

I guess that every single FPS idea has been used up then. Shooting + zombies = used , Shooting + terrorists = used , Shooting + space = used , shooting + far off unknown island = used.

So making something new might be hard , and crappy , since every bloody idea in gaming has been used. Unless you want to make a game about a pervert named Frank , armed with a nailgun , a silly haircut and a gaming world that is made of fluffy demons and hugs.

But about every "new" fps is just a copy-paste of some older game , just that they got new characters , weapons and storyline. Most games are that way anyways.

Yeah pretty much all FPS' are the same nowadays, with the exception of a few that are really trying to bend the genre, i.e. Mirror's Edge, Portal. It's come to the frustrating point where every game is the same as the one before it, we need a revolution, if you will, something that will get the gaming community out of it's "Seen it, and done it" rut.

This.

I find a huge differences in gameplay and game mechanics between games like CoD4 and Halo 3 and GoW (1 or 2). I mean, the perspective and basic idea is the same (Look through eyes, shoot stuff), but that doesn't make the games blurringly similar. Not by a long shot.

Portal is one of the few FP(game?)'s i've enjoyed in a long time. ^^
