Why are gamers never satisfied?

I found this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7VAhzPcZ-s&feature=related] review on YouTube and I can't help asking why are some of us never satisfied? A few years ago people were still guessing about graphics and the realism games were inevitably going to have. Now that we're there (at least somewhat) we're still not satisfied but what's worse some people seem to be unable to follow their own train of thought. Criticising the gaming industry for a lack of new gameplay mechanics but then without giving reasons denouncing 'Portal' seems utterly backward to put it nicely. Does anyone else feel like regardless of how advanced and innovative the games industry becomes (disregarding the 80% of games which are garbage) there will always be annoying elitists who will complain for no good reason?

Don't lump everyone on the same boat. There are plenty of people that are perfectly satisfied. There will always be people that are unsatisfied about everything.

I quote comes to mind from another member of the escapist, whose name I cannot remember or which forum it was. He or She said "Hating Modern Warfare 2 is nearly as popular as liking it" that is only one answer to your question. I suppose it is nostalgia mixed with dissapointment and too high expectations.

I want to comment on the video itself, because it really pisses me off. This fucking idiot is almost everything wrong in the industry today.

To begin with, it's really, REALLY hard to be taken seriously when you're advocating originality while almost literally ripping off every stylistic element of another person's video. Oh, and also when you picture yourself with an emo haircut. This critic who quite blatantly (and barely even facetiously) rides on coattails is not who anyone would want to hear about helping the video games industry.

Next, this person is one of those gamer "elitists". Eugh. I don't even want to touch this can of worms. This guy wants to revert everything back to the good old days of gaming, when it wasn't about compelling storylines---oh wait, they totally were. Yes, you had your Marios and Megamans. You know what you also had? ZORK. MONKEY ISLAND. FINAL FUCKING FANTASY. Since the beginning, people have been experimenting with interactive storytelling. Before even video games, there was DnD and choose-your-own adventure novels. No one can just ignore such a significant role storytelling has played in the video gaming industry. Way to kill about half of the gaming industry from the start, asshole.

But not even that; he doesn't want us to introduce gaming to new audiences. This fucking geek (for once, with a completely negative connotation) says that if you don't like gaming the way it is, with one feeling an arbitrary sense of accomplishment for ridiculously hard feats of platforming prowess, then YOU'RE NOT A TRUE GAMER (flex muscular thumbs).

Seriously, this guy just makes my blood boil. Fuck him.

I'm going to use a recent example I ran into for this, that of Final Fantasy 13. I bought it on release day, excited because I actually owned a system that an FF game was releasing on at release and heartily reminiscing through my massive nostalgia glasses on 7 and 8. I still haven't quite finished it, and I lost track of the number of times I literally stopped playing after getting one save point further to prevent myself from punching the TV. The game has such a ridiculous amount of potential to be the herald of not just JRPGs, but RPGs as a whole and they completely biffed it in a million ways despite a massive budget and over three years of development.

To keep this to as simple and concise as possible, the focus was on being flashy and not actually making a good game. The focus seems to be off a lot now and I believe that is the main cause for the lack of satisfaction. Portal is widely regarded as the amazing piece of pure gold it is, so I don't know what his issues are with it, but plenty of the big name, big budget games don't live up to what they should. They don't even do the core parts of the game well.

I'm sure I'll take flak for this, but I'm going to use Mass Effect as an example. Bioware is hit and miss with me, and Mass Effect felt like a crappy Gears of War (I played Mass Effect first and I still feel that way) with a couple of colors and a few very shoddy RPG elements thrown in. The dialogue selection method was nicer than a straight list at the bottom of a paragraph, but something like that doesn't make up for poor gameplay when a different game has done it fantastically. Rip it off if you have to, Darksiders was fantastic.

Before anyone else says it, this isn't limited to gaming.
To add to this point. It's human nature to never be satisfied, it's how we have evolved and produced the world we are in now. We always strive for more. Well most of us do. :) <3

maybe because millions of people fall under the category "gamer" and of cause we dont all have the exact same taste, i know it sucks, because we all that we are right and that everyone else is wrong, so they should just shut up.

Seriously, it seems like you dont understand that "gamers" aren't just two guys and that we all want something else, heres a nice little example: i dont like the CoD series, but 10 million people will pre order any CoD game, im not satisfied but about 9.5 million people are.

It's certainly the jobs of the critics to never be satisfied. If we didn't have those snarky bastards complaining about everything then where would the motivation for the games industry to make better games come from. If we were like 'this is fine' about everything then we'd just get a whole lot of 'okay' games and things would never progress. That exact thing happened with medicine. For about a thousand years there was this massive stand-still when there was only one medical text that was judged by the church to be 'correct' even though the truth was that it was full of errors. Um. That may not be the most relevant example, nevertheless I stand by my point.

It's not rocket science: Here's how it works.

1. Gaming industry filled with (for the most part) by-the-numbers games.

2. Someone decides to make a game that really makes an effort to be good/push boundaries/try something new.

3. Gamers fall in love with this game/these games.

4. Gaming industry still filled with (for the most part) by-the-numbers games.

5. Gamers wonder why more games can't be more like/have same features as that one great game/games.

This cycle continues until the gamer is reduced to a horrible jaded wreck. Only the appearance of more of these mold-breaking good games can slow the deterioration.

Hah, excellently surmised, sir. With the use they recieve, a standard becomes established and a desensitizing occurs. Then they need more and more for something to be 'original' or 'creative'. I like to just be satisfied with what I have, however. Makes life much nicer.

Would you be satisfied with a microwave whose only functioning part was the clock? I mean it's a great clock, but you paid for a microwave. Granted I'm taking a small part of what you said and applying it to my own context.

Im going to put it down to hype.
Games these days get so much hype, its hard for them to live up to your expectations. Take fable for instance, many people where pissed off because it didnt match the expectations peter molyneux had given you. However back in the days of fable i didnt really keep up with gaming news, so i had no idea what peter had promised for the game, so when i picked it up, it didnt have any overlyhigh expectations for the game to match and i did genuinly enjoy the game on its own merits.
Now if you take half life 2 for example, i bought it a few years after it came out, because i had heard every fanboy on earth say it was the jesus of gaming, and i was pretty disapointed and didnt even finish it.
Annnyway i think ive rambled enough now so im going to stop typing.

Too much hype is usually the cause *cough* MW2 *cough* , if you just avoid the hype only the really truly shit games will leave you unsatisfied. Judge a game on its own merits (unless its a sequel)
