Though I like thsi <url=http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110826124342AAedAm5>question more
Apparently someone hadn't realised that Alex has been a girls name for centuries.

And in answer of the OPs question its just an existing naming convention, theres some sort of weather phenomena that is named after men, I just can't remember what.
EVERY OTHER HURRICANE IS GIVEN A MALE NAME. Including Hurricane Alex.

I thought cyclone naming convention was pretty much common knowledge, apparently it's not.
It is in Australia. We learned it in Primary (elementary) school.

Then again, I lived in the Northern Territory for about 6 years and weathered about 3 cyclones.

One of which was called Hamish. He was the largest one worth mentioning while I was there.
The two places I've lived have been New England and Florida, two of the most hurricane-prone place in the US, it's sort of sad that more people aren't familiar with it here.
I can understand Florida getting Hurricanes, it's essentially the US's answer to Queensland.

But you guys get them up north? New England is like Massachusetts and Maine and stuff right?

That's ridiculous.

Cyclones are all about the Sun and Beaches, we only get them in Summer usually. The big ones especially so.

But you guys get snow up there hey? That's crazy.
We don't get hurricanes as they are in Florida, we get "tropical storms" which are the leftovers of the hurricane by the time they've traveled up north. It's about the only time Vermont ever gets more than five minutes of rain at a time, too.

They're not, the hurricane naming system alternates between genders. Every other storm is the opposite gender from the last.

I don't know how you missed the, approximately 4 or 5, correct answers but managed to see that one. It baffles the mind.

As others have said, it alternates between male and female names and they are named in alphabetical order.

Adam
Betty
Carl
Daisy
Edward
Francesca
George
Hillary
Iain
Jessica
Keegan
Leanne
Michael
Norah
Oliver
Patricia
Quinn
Rebecca
Samuel
Tracey (Darwin anyone?)
What the fuck name starts with U?

Anyway, you get the point, I assume they skip some letters, like X or Z but you know what I'd getting at.

Cyclone (opposite of a Hurricane, it goes the opposite way because it lives in the southern hemisphere) Larry destroyed a massive amount of property and crop damage in Far North Queensland, Australia a number of years back.

But you're correct, the more publicised Hurricanes and Cyclones tend to have been females. It's merely a coincidence.
This. Is Urkel a name?

They found out a few years ago that having only female names for the storms wa sexist so they alternate.

I would have guessed that because the persons that find them are ussually men and they want to name her for someone important (other than themselves) and there's a bigger chance that the person would be female but i guess i was in the wrong too.
Someone clicked the red button....

OT: What about hurricane Ivan?
I guess the question's been answered now...

Women are exciting at first, and a miracle to see. But when you get too involved you start loosing control and end up wrecked or thrown off into another county.

Hurricane andrew wonders if he wasn't destructive enough.

He's very sad now. Look what you've done.
I have never heard of Hurricane Andrews.
I think that's pretty obvious.

Well i think the hurricanes are letting down the males here.
Look up hurricane Andrews, they aren't "letting the males down". Second costliest hurricane in US history with some 60 deaths.

Don't forget a few years ago Hurricane Ivan. I found that hilarious because I had a cousin named Ivan living in Florida at the time it hit. Ivan vs Ivan.

Hurricane Paul's.

its just rare to see the biggest and baddest hurricanes end up having male names, but there are a lot of hurricanes that are given male names. i find it more odd that they are given names to begin with. it has to suck having a name that is later given to a deadly hurricane. i wonder how many girls named Katrina disliked this fact.

Damn it you beat me to it.

On topic;

I was told that they got the names from either the dicovering meterologist's wife/girlfriend or their childhood bully if it was particularly big one. But thanks to this thread I can see that the person who told me that was talking out of their backside. On plus side I learned something new today.
