They're not, the hurricane naming system alternates between genders. Every other storm is the opposite gender from the last.

Hurricane andrew wonders if he wasn't destructive enough.

He's very sad now. Look what you've done.

afaik its dependant on the direction they revolve so if they spin one way they are "female" and if they spin the other way they are "male" and they are named alphabetically as they form tho many don't get very big or make landfall and so you don't hear their names on the news.
Rotation is governed by the Coriolis force, so the storms will rotate in one direction in the northern hemisphere and in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere.

I have never heard of Hurricane Andrews.
I think that's pretty obvious.

Well i think the hurricanes are letting down the males here.

I would have guessed that because the persons that find them are ussually men and they want to name her for someone important (other than themselves) and there's a bigger chance that the person would be female but i guess i was in the wrong too.

^ ^ ^ Guys, Google is your friend.

There is a naming system that's followed pretty much to the letter.

Did i ask for your opinion?
NO!

Now begone, i have much to ponder and make threads about.

Disclaimer: This was sarcastic, do not take this seriously.
I need to say this since the Escapist is as good with sarcasm as i am with people.
Why can't you read it in my voice!?
(that was also sarcastic, andi hate myself for doing this disclaimer)

Apparently someone hadn't realised that Alex has been a girls name for centuries.

And in answer of the OPs question its just an existing naming convention, theres some sort of weather phenomena that is named after men, I just can't remember what.
Yeah, except everyone called him, he, his, so yeah.

EVERY OTHER HURRICANE IS GIVEN A MALE NAME. Including Hurricane Alex.

I thought cyclone naming convention was pretty much common knowledge, apparently it's not.

Because women leave a trail of destruction when they're mad!

I really have no idea, just another stupid naming system. Of course, there are a few male hurricanes, as well.
