I generally prefer the manga ( as it's normally the original form of the story anyway) and being a mangaka myself know that there is a stress about the issue over going to an anime format.

Biggest problem is that an anime following your series almost to the T will catch up with your current point FAST, so to buy time alot of studios add in alot of random scenes, and worse yet even entire seasons that are filler...not written by the real writer, not always approved by the writer, ( the bount arch, and several of the episodes over the last few months of bleach were fillers, and not considered cannon at all)

Now I get both manga, and anime straight from japan no subs, just as it is.. then see it later on " months or years later" in the West completely taken out of context and the language changed...

Now fair to say thats not always a bad thing, as some phrases, or context is something anyone in the west, even the most die hard otaku will have problems understanding, so they paraphrase it alot, though some series do this more than others.

when something goes anime it already faces a change while in studio...in the east, just like in the West...things aired on TV have to meet certain criteria, so to assure this the studio directors have to edit it down in content quite often.. then should it reach, lets say the states.. it has to usually be edited down further to be more people friendly by U.S standards.

Sometimes it's completely bastardized. Lets take Desert punk. In the manga it's a long on-going series that has a dark and very brutal overtone, it's quite violent, and forces one to really confront the darkest aspects of human nature...
however the anime version of it, though touching the main plot was converted to an over the top comedy rife with big boob jokes, and the " anime's" main character on an eternal quest to get layed, and get payed. then the anime abruptly ends after the first story arch, just as the serious nature starts to come into play. this was done to make it more " people friendly"

and lastly sometimes anime can just blow * even more when you have read a good series before it's made into a cartoon* is because often times the writer /creator of the manga series has not obtained the full rights to make the jump from one medium to another. that is to say a down and out studio has a intern obsessed with your manga...he shows the studio head, they decide " hey we can make this into a cartoon!" well guess what.. they can do so without ever going to you to get permission, and if they put out a half assed show of your popular title, your manga can suffer if its bad.. if it booms you don't see a dime, and it " ws" rare for court battles to go in favor of the manga creator. so for a time it was rare for a origional creator to have full rights over film, print, and marketing..one of the rare ones was Takahashi Romiko ( romiko takahashi) when she began work on Inuyasha she made sure to have her rights fully covered. Though there has been a move to change the japanese copyright system to match more of that of the U.S.

wow this is going on longer than I expected

but in closing I basically wanted to bring up SOME reasons an anime can be...less than great... when looking at it from a transition from paper to film.

and sometimes... a studio can produce crap, just like they can anywhere else in the world.
A very informative wall 'o text.

Didn't know that about Desert Punk. I'd really like to read the manga if i could, but I don't know if anyone has it licensed to be done in english, nor can I find scanlations of it anywhere. It's a really good series but, honestly, it's kinda hard to like Kanta when he's the biggest pervert in anime that I've ever seen. At least Kasuna is a likeable character

Scans and such I think have never been done of it for the manga...What we see on the anime is a....altered version of the first volume where as in the second volume Kasuna becomes " as close" to the main character as the series gets, and the machine gun brothers get much larger parts.

though I do like the anime as well I just try not to connect the two directly ( though anyone who has not seen the series.. if you have netflix, they have it in their streaming section)

another manga I would LOVE to see go to anime if done right is Saint young men...a satirical comedy where Jesus, and Buddha come to earth as mortals and are room mates in the modern age.. funny as hell.. more so with JC blowing all the rent money on samurai armour.

Though this isn't always true (the Cowboy Bebop manga for example, was made after the anime), but I agree with the original stories being better in at least 90% of the cases. It is good to use as a rule of thumb, that most 'animéd' mangas aren't worth watching.

Anime never follows a protagonist from beginning to end without spewing at least 27.4 new characters for us to have to find out about. The two worst offenders of this crime are Bleach and Naruto. I remember watching Bleach and thinking, "Well, this ain't bad, not the best, but I could watch this." Cut to a season or 2 later and suddenly they expect us to care about all the backstories of all the mother fucking reaper people and why they hate people who poop on cats! I could have sworn I was watching a story about the main character introduced to me in the beginning! What if Star Wars cut away from Luke's journey and just wandered off to tell us about an Ewok named Fiddly Nuts and how he just HATES waffle irons? There would be a lot of pissed of nerds out there! It's the ADHD of anime. After a few minutes with one character, the writers get bored, see something awfully sparkly and invent Captain Wiffle Bottom, the guy who stands in corners and watches turtles walk about. And of course we can't forget about the turtles epic journey through life that led him to the point we meet him. What the fuck was I talking about? Oh yeah, I hate tape! It tastes like shit! *yammering continues, fade to black, lights go up, audience silent, small child crying*
You can't judge anime by the shit they feed you on cartoon network. You have to keep in mind, most mainstream anime's are shonen's ie.. stupid action animes with formulaic, repeating plotlines, made for 14 year old boys to watch as they go through puberty.

Anime is not really mainstream in America, generally the only ones that get imported in and liscended are those that are easy to merchandise (your naruto, your bleach, etc.) Anime hasn't started sucking, just american television.

If you want to see good anime, I suggest keeping up to date with the studios your from which your favorite animes have spawned, (Bones, Gainax, etc.) or check out an anime convention from time to time. They generally have the latest and greatest stuff you haven't heard about.

If you're looking for a suggestion, 3 of my most recent favorites are

Gurren Lagann:
27 episode long comedy/drama/action mech anime from Gainax, the people who brought you FLCL

Soul Eater:
51 episodes, this is bone's latest project, excellent art style, they're on episode 48 right now so you can catch it before it ends if you hurry)

Spice and Wolf:
16 Episodes, this is more of a drama than it is anything else. It follows a merchant on his journey to take a human incarnated wolf back to her home in the north. Sadly they only made the first season, but its rumored a second season is soon to come.

You can find the whole series on Netflix if you have a subscription. The english dub is pretty horrid though. :(

What's wrong with bleach?
There are some crappy episodes (like the entire Bounto arc) but it's still good.

Yeah, doesn't kanta die in the manga? like, permanently? I know Kasuna thinks he dies in the anime, but he comes back later on. It'd be nice to see more of the machine gun brothers too; seems their only point in the anime is to get on Kanta's nerves most of the time

@ that manga: lolwut? sounds pretty funny to me

Oh, I've seen the whole anime series. I own the box set, actually. I've just heard the manga relies less on fan service, which would make it a whole lot better in my opinion

Well the animation/art style is pretty awful in my opinion. Aside from that however, bleach is just another mindless shonen, with no real plot, formulaic story arcs, and no end in sight. It's the dragon ball z of this generation.

Bleach in a nutshell

Something unexpected happens.
Ichigo finds he's too weak to do anything about it.
Ichigo gets stronger.
Ichigo wins.
Something unexpected happens.
Ichigo gets stronger... until the end of time.

You get my point, good anime's generally have a plot... and a point. Once they deviate from the plot in order to extend its life in the spotlight(filler) it becomes trash. Hell, Naruto was good for the first 50 episodes, and then they put in 180 episodes of filler and killed it.

Ah ok. I tried to get into it, but I just couldn't handle the voice acting, and unfortunately all netflix has online is the dubbed version. I got maybe 9 episodes in before i could stomach no more.

But with any media, money+time=junk.

I'm in one hundred percent agreement. there are very few interesting characters in that show to begin with, yes it's cool to know how the visards were created, or that one episode with kenpachi is school, but do I really care about Chad's backstory? no, Chad sucks.

The one reason I still watch that show is because I want to know what the hell is going on with Ichigo's dad and why the hell does Chad have Hollow powers? Unless they can throw something else confusing as hell in there I will stop caring about that show.
dude it gets crazy near the end of the arc. They explain a lot of things, then there is one last twist...

Since I was about 12 or so, I never really liked anime. The reason it's all absolutely stupid is because it's aimed at young, undiscerning audiences, or an audience of ridiculous nerds who will watch and enjoy it simply because it's anime. It's bad for the same reason porn is bad: because it doesn't need to be good in order to be profitable.

My least favorite anime cliche is the only joke that is ever used in anime: male character says something lecherous, female character reacts loudly and angrily, and possibly with violence. This isn't funny and never was funny, and almost every joke I've ever seen in anime is either exactly this or a variation on it.
Oh please, generalizing, eh?

Some anime is really, really serious. And I mean it.

There is good anime and there is bad anime. But, unfortunatelly, there is only this much good anime compared to heaps of bad anime. You know, just the same as anything else in other types of media ? (And anime is just a medium.)
Yeah, this is what I generally tell people. Just think of anime as another form of television: It's got action, it's got drama, it's got romance, it's got violence, horror, kid stuff, etc.

Well, that's probably a formula applicable to most shonen shows with more then 50 or 100 episodes. The longer it draws on, the worse it becomes >_<
Which is why a good rule of thumb is, stop watching past episode 50. Any good, self respecting anime will have run its course by then. The only exception I'm willing to make to that rule is Kenshin. Though even kenshin got pretty lame after the Kyoto arc.

Old anime is good anime. A lot of the stuff now is just based on the fact it's a cartoon, skipping out on awesome plots.

Never heard of that third one, but the Tenchi series is one of my favorite. Love Hina was ok, I just liked the manga better; same with Chobits

That's not really true, you just need to know where to look. Anime to Japan is like hollywood to us. There's plenty of excellent recent animes. You just need to know where to look.

I see things like this, either you like anime or you hate it. It is that simple but what people can agree on is that some anime is worse then others.
