Alright, so I was on Facebook tonight, and an acquantance of mine (named Melanie) posts in her status that she is watching District 9. I like that movie, so I post a comment on it.

Immediatly this guy, named Nick, starts calling me gay. And for no reason. I have never done anything wrong to this guy, yet he sees it fit to make fun of me and call me names and stuff. And it is kind of pissing me off.

Now, let me set the context here: I'm smart, shy to people I don't know, and a massive nerd. He is pretty much the polar opposite: dumb, ripped, and constant;y being a douche to everybody, butting in where he isn't wanted. a stereotypical jock (we are in highschool btw).

Alright so here is my question: we are people such douche bags? Seriously, I have been playing this flame war smart. and he looks like a total asshole. So I mean what is the point? Why do people do this shit?

If anyone has any comments, please post them.

If your name is Threx, then check Melanies Facebook. You'll see what I'm talking about.

Honestly, everyone is an asshole from time to time. Its a response to those we feel threatened by, are annoyed with, or simply don't like. It can also be used in an attempt to make oneself seem superior.

In this case, its freaking facebook. He probably has no emotional attachment to his statement and is just having fun, and you shouldn't take it so seriously.

Bingo.

You said it yourself, OP, he's a douche to everyone.
It's apparently just his nature.

It's a problem that humans have. The majority are jerks. It just becomes second nature nowadays. I feel that the Internet is increasing this problem, as now you can be a big jerk to people far a way from you who you may not even know.

The internet is a place where people are, for the most part, completely anonymous. This means that people will do things here on the internet that they probably wouldn't do in real life. Now, on Facebook, most of the anonymity is taken away, unless you don't really know this guy. In which case, he's probably just trolling it up, or tried to make a joke and failed miserably because sarcasm doesn't work without tone of voice, which text doesn't convey very well.

He's going to keep messing with you until you stop letting it bother you.

It's not bothering me, I'm just asking why people do this. It's not like he stands anything to gain.

Quick answer: the world is full of assholes and they are bolder on the internet.

Long answer: he's compensating for some insecurity he has. He doesn't like you probably because you are smart and shy. He doesn't grock you and if this girl gives you any attention, he thinks that is because she finds you superior to him in some way and he can't understand why. So he beats his chest and tries to belittle you to make himself seem like the better mate. It's a simple territorial spat. For some reason he thinks this girl's facebook wall is his territory and you are an intruder. It's the digital equivalent of lifting his leg.

I've had some similar experiences recently too. There's this one kid on my track team that is constantly treating me like I ran over his dog or something without any good reason. He is also generally egotistical and a bit of an elitist. Basically he's the kind of person that will only laugh at his own jokes and acts offended if someone says something that he doesn't one hundred percent agree with. Some people really are just douche bags.

Because it's fun, I do it to my friends and visa versa. It's bonding moments with people you are close to.

Look at 4Chan. That's the kind of thing they do all the time. He's a troll, and there is no explanation for his behavior. Just shake your head and move on.

Or you can do what I would do and call him a dick-nozzle. Then shake your head and move on. It's ultimately up to you

That the amazing thing about the Internet- He abuse you, you abuse him back. As you say, he is dumb and therefore easy to abuse.

Find what he likes and torment it. He likes Slipnot, calls them gay. He like the raiders, say they are the gaiders.

See where I'm getting at this?

He bought a rock
You bought a gun
He bought a gun
You bring armagaddon.

Rip on him back. Just make sure it gets to him or else he won't be affected. Bullies bully because they don't expect retaliation so retaliate!
