Why are people buying Skyrim?

I only buy games I'm really excited for at launch. Other games which are no less awesome but not quite so high on my list get purchased a little down the line. This year has been a great year for games, but this October/November cross-over has been especially stellar.

That said I've not bought Arkham City yet and I will not be getting AC: Revelations at launch because November is going to be expensive enough with Skyrim and SR: The Third coming out.

I'll be buying Skyrim early on because I'm in the mood to play a game like this and because I'm a victim of marketing hype.

The hype surrounding the game is very high, and several of my friends are picking it up at launch. These factors combined will make me feel left out of future conversations with my friends if I wait 8-12 months to get the GOTY edition.

I don't plan on getting any DLC though. If I do it'll be in the form of a Steam sale GOTY edition for under $10.00 a couple years from now.

Here's how I got Skyrim: I unboxed an unusual hat in TF2. Had no need for it. Traded it to a guy for a preorder. ???? SKYRIM!!

If your willing to wait long enough for all the DLC to come out and be released in one big package I'd say you probably don't like TES very much. I mean thats a LONG wait.

Now before anyone gets mad or assumes this is some sort of anti-Skyrim thread, it's not. I'm not bashing the game, the developer or anyone who is interested in it.

But let's look at Oblivion and Fallout 3. Both of those games were eventually given expansion packs, and then re-released as a game that contained the original game plus all of the expansion packs. Sometimes these were cheaper than the original game.

So assuming that's going to happen with Skyrim, why buy it now? Is it just a matter of impatience? Do people want to support Bethesda by possibly buying the game twice?

Is there anyone reading this who does just plan on buying it once the Game of the Year edition comes out?

Just curious.
Because I want it next Friday and not next year.

Additionally if everyone just waited for the GOTY to come out, it wouldn't sell enough copies to have a GOTY edition.

I've already 3 copies of Morrowind and 2 copies of Oblivion.

It gets hyped up, and it becomes a must-have item.

Personally I usually follow the late buyer approach, when my pc can actually play the older games at high speed and the modding community and developers have ironed out most of the bugs- but many people I know are buying the game at first chance.

I figure people just build it up in their mind, it becomes an impulse buy for them; even if they don't see it that way.
That right there is the most rational response; at least for PC or any other inherently unstable (non-native) systems.
1) You give the game developer time to iron out crippling bugs, and patch the game
2) You let the price come down a bit
3) You will have word-of-mouth and peer-review available to you

Of course, the poetic irony in this is that none of that would work unless there were already legions of fans waiting to buy it on launch (the initial price wouldn't go down, nobody could review it since nobody bought it, and ,love it or hate it, bugs are most quickly reported and resolved by those playing the game).

So despite how persistently obnoxious they can become, remember to thank the fanboys every once in a while.
...Quietly of course.

It's just impatience. Still, early buyers will end up spending a lot more than just 60 dollars on the game since Bethesda is bound to release DLC packs. I'll probably end up getting it in a year or two when the GOTY edition comes out but it's not really a priority at the moment.

Yeah, impatience mostly. I am lucky enough to have enough money stashed away to be able to buy both the game and any eventual DLC/expansions on release.

I never understood why people complained about the leveling system in oblivion, if it gets to hard just turn down the difficulty, that should work unless you made a character without putting any thought into their combat capability

edit:sorry i posted this in the wrong thread, please ignore

I waited for the oblivion GOTY edition to be on sale before I picked it up and I regret the decision. I felt like I missed out on the community that sprang up around the game. The game had (has?) one of the most amazing mod communities I've ever seen and I regret not being a part of it.

So yeah, I'm going to be buying skyrim on release, so I don't miss it this time.

What can I say? I'm a slave to open world/sandbox-style games.

These games and especially the Elder Scrolls are really popular right now. People buy these early because they like the games, plus with stuff like Steam and XBL, getting the expansion packs when they come out has gotten really easy too.

Personally, I have the game pre-ordered (have for months) and will be going to the midnight release at our town mall if at all possible. I want to play this game NOW, and not wait a year or two for another version that, lets face it, may not even come out. With my hard drive situation right now (I have less than 1G of space left on my drive) I won't be buying the DLC as it comes out anyways. If a GOTY edition does indeed come out later on, I'll sell my original copy and buy the GOTY version.

That sounds more financially practical and I regret buying a few games that got a GOTY or updated version not that much later. But, with a game like Skyrim I can't wait to play it. This could hold true for waiting for just a general price drop. A lot of games that I want but can wait I'll try to get the better deal.

I personally love to support companies I think are making games worth buying by paying full price. I think Rocksteady and Bethesda both deserve my money this month but I can only afford one so unfortunately I gotta go with Bethesda and their ability to make me THIS hyped for a game.

I do this with things. If I like it or think that the developers/directors/crew/author/whatever deserves supporting and deserves my money then I am more than happy to give it to them. I am more than happy to pay to see Scott Pilgrim at the cinema and then buy it on DVD just as I am more than happy to buy Skyrim or Misfits on DVD.

I will not however support things I don't see are worth supporting. If I want to play MW3 at somepoint I will borrow, rent or buy pre-owned or when it's not £50.
