Why are people in college still bullies?

Humans can and will be cruel. Partly due to ill-curbed laws of nature and also facilitated through plain stupidity, insecurity, bad parenting, etc. I wonder what the animal world thinks of us.

As others have said, bullies don't magically disappear in college.

However, college is when one generally has the ability to completely avoid such people. The institutional organization of elementary, middle, and high school are replaced with more freedom and larger numbers of people.

The majority of those going to college are young adults experiencing their first taste of the freedom adulthood gives. They're no longer under the rules of their parents. The issue is they have no experience as adults yet or the burden of responsibility that it brings and still act like children, often clinging to what they know to get by for as long as they can.

If they were a bully in high school, it's what they know and understand and will be that way in college as well.

Far too many times I've seen people bullied out of debates. I can understand the intent of Hate Speedh laws, but like most laws, it can be circumvented into a bullying machine. Either way, you going to get bullying. Your point will be invalidate through insults and, for some, they may lose their livelihood or even their lives.

There isn't any feedback loops here, like you'd see in much of capitalism or democracy. And unfortunately, like in Samta Fe, the only feedback is when you're randomly being shot by a victim of bullying.

Bullies are not limited by age.
I find it terribly ironic that "Sic Semper Tyrannis" is what John Wilkes Booth planned to yell after shooting Lincoln in the back of the head.

OT: Some people just never grow up.

I'm in college right now, and I have to say, I've been incredibly lucky. Perhaps its because I'm in ComSci, so we're all nerds here, but there is such a great diversity of hobbies and interests that no judges you for what you enjoy. Even the people you least expect are into some weird shit. As a person who has his toes dipped in so many things, anime, movies, video games, comics, cartoons, etc, I find it so easy to make small talk with essentially anyone in the CS department. Even profs!

This girl I like had a presentation for an English class, and her topic was yaoi. She had pictures too. We all did find it funny, but no one actually teased or bullied her for it.

But I do know that in other courses they are somewhat more judgmental, especially among the older batches. I haven't really heard of any specific occurrences of bullying, but I know it happens.

Generally though we're all just dying here together, when you're staying up late every night to finish requirements you don't exactly have a lot of energy to bully people.

Just a fun observation. Someone who's constantly complaining about the president gravitates to a motto favored by someone who assassinated a US president.

As far as relevance? It was an aside, which is why I said On Topic afterwards.

We could also talk about your stuff, or you could realize this topic is about college bullies.

One, don't know what you mean by "my stuff". Two, I do realize, I already said it was an aside. Any particular reason you're running this into the ground, and can we let it lie already?

Remember, silence is a valid answer. Just like a TellTale game.
