Isn't Dante (of the Devil May Cry) a half-demon of some kind? So no human.
RPGs, as already mentioned.
Destroy all humans: You are a gray alien.
Sci-fi strategy games have all sorts of races and campaings for them.
Sam and Max: A dog and a homicidal bunny.
Grim Fandago: protagonist is a skeleton.

shall we go on...?
Yes because thats not even ten games. Shall we count all the human main character games...
Notice the two genres mentioned: RPGs and I'd say about 50% of RTS.... That's a lot of games...

Arbiter was soooo shit. :p hated playing as him, was just so boring.

My question is really, why do you think we can't relate to them?
Umm, maybe we can't relate to non-human protagonists because... they're not human? :p

I have no idea...mister vrex, you've brought up an interesting issue.
With that outta the way, one of the reasons I think for this is that people are insanely narrow-minded. I mean, even just playing as and thereby identifying with a black guy in GTA: San Andreas was about as well recieved as a flesh wound (yes, yes, i quoted yatzhee, big whoop, I DONT hinge on everything he says, but that fit well).

Me, for one, I'd like to see Final Fantasy VII remade with furries instead of humans. That'd be pretty interesting, don't you think? Or we could do it with a game people don't worship like it's the second coming of christ, Final Fantasy VIII.
Dunno why, the FF series just seem so good for it.

Alternatively, it would be interesting to see a game where you could play a game assuming the role of a shapeshifter and like, gained people's abilities by killing and absorbing th-wait a minute....
But still, Alex Mercer is human, and so are most of the people he "interacts" with.
It'd be a cool concept to put in Elder Scrolls V or VI i guess.

Or we could base a game in Oblivion style for example on D&D, what with the dragonborn, the elves etc.
Yes, the traditional hero races are mostly humanoid to some degree, but who knows, maybe you could play as a goblin?

Still, these are just my two cents and I don't claim to light the world on fire with this comment, but I hope I can make people see that a full-raccoon mario or a bear-barret could make for barrels of fun

You want a game by game list? Okay, I'll give it ten minutes and see what I can remember. No googling for me on this matter.

He was fun! Anti-Heroes are fun and pleseant to watch/play/read.

The Shrike from Hyperion novels, Tyrion from A Song of Ice and Fire, Alucard from Hellsing, Man with No Name from The Dollars Trilogy even Batman is an Anti-Hero.

You don't need to be sympathetic for Crypto, he was a wacky character in a wacky game.

Considering we are humans ourselves, it's logical that most games feature human protagonists because it's easier to identify with them and to play as a human fighting to defend humanity from an alien force. Those can easily be characterized as emotionless, cold killing machines, so the humans are "the good guys".

As mentioned by others, though, there are many, many exceptions to this rule. It seems to be mostly true in mainstream games, anyway.
So I don't see the problem.

Fire Warrior the player controlled a Tau warrior and your enemies in the game were Imperial Guard, Space Marines, and later Chaos forces. Principally humans though were your targets, and you played the alien.
It's true that Fire Warrior didn't have a human protagonist, but there is a reason this game hasn't been a huge bestseller
it sucked

Of all the video game characters in the world, the one I can relate to the most is this guy:
Although I think this doesn't count because he acts more like a human than a squirrel... Still, he is the most likable - I've grown on this guy ;p

The game would be Dawn of War, of the Warhammer 40 000 universe. And the name was Shas'o Kais is Dark Crusade and Shas'o Or'es'Ka is the Soulstorm. In addition to them, there were the eldar, dark eldar, orcs, chaos, necron...
I, UH, KNEW THAT, I WAS JUST OBFUSCATING IGNORANCE

Yeah, I haven't played a game of Warhammer in my life.
PS. Don't tell anyone.

Seriously, this is a stupid discussion. The point has already been disproved, enumerating through a huge list of games that break you rule is just a waste of effort.

Humans relate well to human main characters, even characters that are not human are anthropomorphized. Publishers like to make money therefore they have human protagonists.

Most of them are sequels...

But still, it is easier for a human to relate and love a human being rather than a four lipped humanoid with high heels (yes i am referring to the Elites in Halo. And they are awesome.)

The reason why it's so underdone is because it's a lot easer to relate to someone(or something) that looks like you.
How do you think Eminem got so popular so fast?
The Warhammer 40k game was Warhammer 40k: Fire Warrior, I believe. In fact, I know because I have it myself on the PS2. It also happens that the main enemies there are all humans. So yeah.

We have Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 plus expansions.
Plancescape: Torment if I remember correctly.

Age of Wonders : Shadow Magic
Age of Wonders 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 1-5 plus expansions might qualify.
Sword of the Stars plus expansions
Master of Orion 1-3

Homeworld
Homeworld 2
Rogue-likes, such as Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) and Nethack.
Sacred 2 at least, not sure about Sacred 1.
Diciples 1 and 2 I believe.
Demigod
Destroy All Humans
Dawn of War 1 plus expansions
Fire Warrior
Death gate
The Scrin campaing of Command and Conquer 3.
The Devil May Cry series
Sonic the Hedgehog (about a dozen games)
earthworm Jim

Yeah Arby's awesome and is actually a prime example when I think about it. That's more what I'm talking about by the way... actual 'serious' characters like the Arbiter.. not things like Spiro and that guy from destroy all humans.
