Why are people so passionate about the platform they use for gaming?

Because they've spend a lot of money on it, and hate being told it was the wrong decision.

Even if it is the truth.

Because people need arbitrary reasons to feel better about themselves (see archnot)

I don't tend to get passionate about my 360, given that it's been replaced twice due to malfunctions. It does what I want it to, and does it well.
However, I do love my netbook. Thanks to it, I rediscovered Age of Empires, KotOR, Warcraft 3, and others that I don't have time to mention.

I think it''s because consoles and (especially) gaming pcs, cost so much they're trying to convince themselves that they made the right choice and that they don't need another console.

Pah!
Don't tell me you bought the toast-man 15x, freakin noob, everybody knows that Heat-king 9000 is the best!

Anyway, the whole thing about console wars is that us Humans are strangely loyal things, and besides we all don't want to admit that we made the wrong choice in not getting the
Game-curler 2510x Hybrid.
Seriosuly, that thing is MINT.

I think Yahtzee sums my opinion up in a nutshell nicely (that, and I'm not interesting enough to add anything valid to this thread):

"I've never really understood the almost crusader-like fervor that consoles attract. Most people would say it's because your mum is only prepared to buy you one console, and if it turns out you didn't pick the winner, the best thing to do is go into denial until the very fabric of reality spontaneously changes, because God knows that's more likely to happen than you admitting fault."

Why do people passionately defend their favorite sports teams, while expressing burning hatred towards an opposing team and its fans?

Really, console fanboyism is so goddamn harmless when compared to the riots, assaults and killings that occasionally spark from two teams of athletes trying to kick a ball into the opposing team's net.

It's sort of already been said, but I'll add my 2 cents.

Psychologically, when people invest time, money, and effort into something they don't want to think they have made the "wrong" choice. How one platform is "wrong" is merely trash talk from fanboys, but people let it get to them and they worry that buying a PS3 and not a 360 was a mistake because [insert reasons]. Essentially, it's insecurity manifesting as a desire to prove one's "correctness" in a field that is really quite subjective.

Simply put, people are dickholes.

I like my PC.

I like my Xbox.

I'm hardly going to argue with myself over which one to play on.

My PC is a lot more powerful and it runs like a dream, I use it for a lot of things but mainly modding.

My Xbox is good when I want to relax on the sofa for a bit.

Both have their uses.

People want to believe that their Investment was worth it. Remember when you were 9yr old and you saved your money until you had enough to buy a console, and you knew dick-all about them? You did not know the dirrerence between a Sega, Nintendo, or Sony? Well, you looked through the Kmart magazines to see the great games that were out and coming out and you picked the one that had the most promise.

$299.99 + $19.99 later and you got home to play a Greatest Hits title on your new system. That system, that you just bought, is YOURS, and you WANT it to be the BEST thing that has ever graced your television, even if you must LIE to yourself to do so.

I did that with my Playstation in 98 and I still fondly remember it, even if there are only a couple of games I would still play today. Then I got a PS2, and it was the same way. Then I saved my quarters and dines until I could get the newer generation of gaming and I had to decide. I could get a PS3 without reverse capability that could not play my great collection of PS2, or I could start a new collection of Xbox 360 games and get the ORGAZMIC Dead Rising game (Left 4 Dead had not come out yet, but when it did, OH, did I ever play the crap out of it). Before I bought my Xbox 360 I was a PS naturalist. I thought the only way to go was SOny because they had the best games. Although I miss some Sony titles, I do enjoy my Xbox 360. Being a Purist is feutile, not every good game comes out on one system. That is not to say that you should buy every system, but do not NERDRAGE over which system is better.

Playstation has the Ico Trillogy, God of War, the platformers, and ect. Xbox has a slew of wretched FPS games and a few other titles to mix up the fray. I chose the Xbox because of the games, not the system, although my system has never red ringed or craped-out on me, which makes me a happy camper who has the delusion that he made a good investment...

While the argument for the fact that it is expensive or your mom only bought you one console does fall in line nicely with Cognitive Dissonance theory, I do not think it is just that. As I become 30 next weekend, I guess I fall in the range of retarded old gamers already. I play games for more than 20 years now on a daily basis. Yet I do not remember any such fanboyism in the early days, when the money argument was just as valid. Hell, one of the best things was when friends had different consoles and pcs so we could play the best games on each when visiting each other. I have the feeling the animosities began later when consoles and pcs started to be more similar and have more and more similar games. In the old days there was no doubt about pcs being way stronger than any console. This also really influenced the core game experiences that could be had. Yet this is not really the case anymore. While pcs will always look better, differences in graphical quality do not have the same meaning anymore (it all looks freaking amazing). And in the end, it is often exactly the same game. I guess each system has its own pros and cons, but when you look on a game level, changes have become really small.

It's human nature, not sure which part, maybe the part that refuses to believe they spent money on the wrong thing.

I've seen this for as long as I can remember, like you - I bet there were NES fans dissing your MSX, and ST fans dissing your Amiga, and... Well it's just the way it is. I defended my ZX Spectrum against the C64 right upto the point that I got a C64, then I defended the Atari ST against the Amiga, even though the Amiga was clearly a better machine. It goes on, and on, and will never stop. People do it with phones, cars, sports teams etc as people have already said - human nature.

I decided a while ago to stop being like that - once I aquired an iMac and iPod - I doubted these things, being a PC user primarily, but damn do I like them now... but owning an apple product puts me right in the firing line.

Things might change though, some people like me own all the options, PC, Mac, Xbox, Wii, PS3, PSP, DS... so there's a more educated opinion I think - I mean I was totally wrong about Mac's, so I go by experience now, if I can help it. When you have that informed opinion, well it's absolutely mindnumbingly annoying when someone ignores it - I love to challenge people who diss one console etc without even trying it. Some people can't afford their own opinion, those trolls are the ones you have to filter out.

You obviously are too young to remember the Sega riots of 1992. So many dead... broken controllers and cartridges strewn through the streets... it was horrible.

But in all seriousness, its all really a matter of my opinion being superior to yours. I personally prefer my PC to my PS3 so therefore the PC is obviously better. Not because i have grown accustomed to the controls of a mouse an keyboard but because they are better. Granted I DO still have my old Sega Saturn, and in all honesty i think its gotten more attention than my PS3 so i may just have some sort of mental deficiency.
Also house of the dead is great.
