Why are realistic games popular when gamers like me just want to get away from reality?

yes i know that. and i never said i represent the gaming community but im just asking WHY people like realism in games not how many people like it. And i know COD MW 2 is not completely realistic but you guys have to admit it is intended to be more realistic than Halo.
AND FOR THE MORONS WHO CAN"T READ MY QUESTION I SHALL REPEAT: I DON'T WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE LIKE REALISTIC GAMES OR HOW REALISTIC THEY ARE. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT GAMERS LIKE YOU LIKE ABOUT IT. NOTHING MORE

And with gamers like me i meant gamers who share my opinion on this subject, not, as you guys understood, that all gamers are like me. please excuse me for my bad english if you notice any. English is my second language. I'm DUTCH AS YOU CAN SEE BY MY NAME!

I like a mix of both elements.
The Ballistic Weapons mod for UT2004 with regeneration is a much better game than MW2 anyway (in my opinion).
"Realistic damage" coupled with recoil physics that make sense (that you can tone down if you want) and a huge slew of firearms...good times.

Games need enough realism for you to be able to suspend your disbelief and get really immersed into the game, I think. People who want realism for the sake of realism need to have a time-out and think about their lives for a a little while.

16 year old 140 lb. 5'8" gamer kid can't really travel to kurgookistan and mow down the taliban with a minigun in real life can he? It's still escapism just with a coat of brown paint and grit.

Realism is more alternate reality, other games, well, some are about shooting yourself in the head to awaken a Persona, or something, others are to have Jedi lightsaber battles and suplex things, and some games just go what the fuck, like Earthbound.

This trailer contains some of the best qoutes on the subject:

"Its a bit crazy, its a bit unrealistic, but its really fun, and it looks very cool."

"Its basically the laws of physics on drugs"

Thats Just Cause 2 btw, one of the most unrealistic action games ever.

I don't like the realism wagon Rockstar jumped on. GTA4 and both DLC's were as fun as diarrhea. Cover system in GTA4 sucks and so does the character movement. It takes Niko 3 seconds to respond to your commands. It's a pain in the ass to play that game. And cover system is just stupid. The entire shooting mechanics is about you crouching behind cover not moving once until the end of the gunfight. That's how easy the game is because of their realism thingy. What happened to run and gun in most video games? Run and gun is awesome. Cover system should be used only when you're wounded. That may not be realistic but it's fun. Realism is boring. If I wanted realism I'd go outside and rob a real bank. At least I'd have fun doing it.

I play games like Arma 2 and Operation Flashpoint because I like the challenge of combat situations and really really REALLY love all types of military equipment, espesially aircraft, which is why I also play flight simulators.

Because realistic games usually mean shooting. And that person killing millions and not getting caught is not realistic.

i'm not a hardcore gamer but i always liked the HAlO series for some reason. and before COD MW 2 was made, everybody i met agreed. Now they say Halo sucks because it isn't realistic. so what? most people watch movies, read books and play games to escape this reality and enter an other one. like the wise says: we decline your reality and substitute our own :D. i would love to hear your opinion about this and only this. Not things like im an idiot because i like Halo, i get that enough.

in short:Is realism in games better than games without any relation to reality?
No games above are realistic, nor try to be.

having realism in games advances the gameing industry as devolpers push the platforms to preform the best they can do.
it also gives experiances in games such as in ARMA IIs case, of realistic combat rather than having to go off and enlist.

however theres both realistic and non realistic games so stop complaining the world dosent revolve aound you.

I think most of the people here put it best; there is no realism in games, and IMO, any claiming realism is lying.

Jump around like a retard, firing rockets every 5 seconds, or working together with people to achieve a common goal, that you would otherwise fail at.

I'll take the tactical squad shooters like BC2 and MAG over the retard frag fest that is Killzone or Halo.

What the OP is hinting at, if indirectly, is the obnoxious tendency for this industry to shift almost completely towards one development strategy in direct response to the commercial success of a single fucking game. As soon as something sells 3-4 million copies, every tool publisher is looking to deliver a roughly identical experience to cash in on a perceived trend. Most of the knockoffs are decidedly inferior, and even the sequels to the originally successful property can be lost in the torrent of me-too bullshit.

For fans of variety, or quality regardless of setting/genre, this groupthink is extremely frustrating.
