People genuinely like the show, therefore it is not a fad. Also the show is pretty good, so go and give it a try before you judge the fanbase.

I don't believe that. Most of these "Bronies" seem to have some sort of connection to 4chan where things become world-wide popular overnight and completely die away a month later.

Reported for making a stupid thread.

One person says something that's slightly intolerant of others' tastes and that means we all think like that? Flawless reasoning.

Nowhere in that quote did I see this person advocate killing "Emos" and I fail to see what Justin Beiber has to do with this (Note: Most people hate him because his music is bland and he's achieved mega-celebrity status nonetheless. Music is, of course, subjective, but that's a discussion for another thread).

And for any future rants that you plan on having: Brony is singular, Bronies is plural. Have a nice day.

Well, you're not going to get a sensible answer, because the Bieber and emo hating is irrational and immature. While MLP probably has more objective merit, the only straightforward reason people don't hate on it is that it's not cool to do so.

Justin Beiber I dislike for being obnoxious. Emos tainted goth culture. I have absolutely no issue with JRPGs, and have found some I really like. I know a lot of 'Bronies', I have no problem with it nor do I encourage it.

My opinions are my own, not dictated by a universal law.

I hear the show's well written and appropriate for all ages though, which would (I assume) be why it has a following. I've not seen it though, and I'm not one to judge without investigating first, so I have no reliable personal view on it.

Well let's break it down:

Most people don't really give a fuck about Justin Beiber, but those who hate him don't really like his music and find his fanbase irritating.

Emo's, or a good portion, are in fact whiny faggots, nuff said. They don't deserve to die, but with how much a good portion of them talk about suicide, we might as well support their cause, right?

Hating them is pointless, because it accomplishes nothing nor does it motivate positive behavior. Then again being one of them is a fad. Hating and not hating all count as fads. In my opinion, no fad is acceptable, but all are welcome.

Why is it okay for middle aged man/teenage males to appreciation a cartoon aimed at 6 year old girls...they find it interesting, enjoyable, and overall a fun cartoon. So what? There were plenty of cartoons aimed at younger kids that also appeal to older audiences. Yeah things can get a bit out of hand, but it's the internet. It'll fade to out a bit eventually, and then it will become simply a very enjoyable cartoon.

Just chill back.

I trying to say something along the lines of why girly stuff like Bieber isn't accepted but Bronieism is? I've never seen it but for 3 minutes but I asume it's the execution and younger target audience.

Most gamers on this site seem to hate FFXIII/JRPGs simply because their characters are feminine and show emotion.
Excuse me, sir, but not all JRPG (or even FF) characters are incredibly feminine.

I changed the title of the thread so I don't offend anyone, as that wasn't my intention.

He may or may not be referring to the fact that "bronies" actually expect to be taken seriously, accepted, and/or joined. In my eyes, bronies have about the same respect level as say, a cultist, the difference being that they aren't trying very hard to hide it. And sure, maybe drinking blood must be really fun and good and all, and not at all like you think it is, but it certainly isn't going to earn you any friends.
To be honest, I'm sure the show is very good and respectable, but you're going to have to be able to talk reasonably to anyone who might say you're an insane blood-drinking cultist.

This. I love the show, and I've never been to 4chan. The Brony culture/fad here on the Escapist introduced me to it, and now I eagerly await the next season. I've introduced friends and family to it and without exception those that try it, love it. The reason the culture gets such publicity is because it's a show for young girls, yet it. is. AWESOME.

Hope, however, is as flat as the rest of the cast of FFXIII. I really wanted to love that game, really, but it just kept trying to put me off.

You know, it is actually possible to genuinely like something. You say you do not believe that these bronies really like MLP:FiM, but... It seems very strange to me that teenage/adult guys would watch a show about magical ponies (though well-drawn), unless they like it. Of course, some people will always be in it for the 'fad'-ness of the concept, but not nearly everyone, in my opinion.

I genuinely like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Personally I dont like the term brony but its growing on me. It is well put together and illustrates the point that "For girls" shouldn't automatically mean that a show couldn't be enjoyed by any demographic. Powerpuff Girls comes to mind for that too.

Friendship is Magic is best described as good cheeky fun.

It's not a stupid thread, he's just voicing his opinion and asking a genuine question.

I kind of agree with the OP. He hasn't really worded his post that well but the point is still made.

I've watched the show and I didn't enjoy it and I didn't really undetstand how people could enjoy it, it was boring and while there were some adult jokes, they weren't funny. I mean it's subjective though, but I just thought it sucked.

But yeah I don't get how someone can call Justin Bieber gay, then go and watch "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic".

Guess what? I hate all of those things that you said up there. What does that mean?

No fad is acceptable.

Oh, and Emos are hated because they are for the most part a giant "Pay attention to me" popularity act, or at least that's what they've become associated with. Seriously, if you are going to force yourself to act all down and depressed in giant groups of friends making no attempts to try and seek happiness, then you deserve to be made fun of. You've unknowingly embraced that decision.

You know I'm gonna jump to the thread creator's defense on this one but MAN poor choice of thread title. "Why are some fads acceptable when others aren't" would have indeed been a much more apt thread title as the current one seems to be MADE to incite backlash.

Unfortunately the question you ask is indeed a mystery that no one has a good answer to beyond the person you speak of is an idiot and the world is full of them. As you can tell, he knows little about Hope as while at first glance Hope appears to be a terrible character he actually grows throughout the course of the game. I started off hating him but by the end I thought he was alright. He had an interesting character arc. Then again, the characters were the best part of FFXIII (aside from Vanille).

More on the current topic, Bronies come in many flavors. Some are just doing it to be ironic or indeed to follow a fad while others do legitimately enjoy the show.

I guess this actually leads to the answer to your question now that I think of it: It all depends on the point of origin. Bronies originated from the internet and has sort of a weird nerd following while Emos and Justin Beiber have their origins outside the internet and represent a very different group of people who generally clash with the mentality of the internet.

JRPGs are a special case though and their backlash mostly stems from a combination of people being burned out on them from last generation, the lack of high quality JRPGs this generation (on console anyway), and the general backlash against Otaku culture due to a combination of how dominant it was a few years ago and people getting sick of it amplified by the fact that many former Otaku who went all out, learned Japanese, and went to Japan quickly learned that Japan is not at all like what they think it is and now they're bitter about it.

Using your examples, I can easily say that hating Justin Bieber and his music is as much of a fad as enjoying his music. That hating people who consider themselves emo is as much of a fad as actually being emo. That for as many people who hate the current Final Fantasy games, there are just as many who love the games.

As for Friendship is Magic, being a brony or being a pony hater are both fads based on love or hate for the show. It's popular, therefore it's going to get a lot of people riled up.
