Why are Star Wars episodes I-III deemed so bad?

Having first watched the films as a 'tween' I couldn't really see what was so bad about them; epic battles, cool sci-fi gadgets, an extensive universe to work with. But, 11 years after the fan-rage started, I can't help but wonder what exactly set them off. (And yes, I have seen the originals.)

Opinions please.

Stupid convoluted plots, weak characters and the fact that every scene uses a blue screen.

- Awful acting, mainly Hayden's fault.
- Too much green screen.
- Two-dimensional characters.
- Gungans.
- Silly plot devices, even more silly than the original films.
- Taking a totally different direction than the original trilogy; way more action, less story and character development.
- Horrible dialogue.

And probably some more. I myself don't hate them as much as most people and I generally find them pretty entertaining. Heck, the one that's seen as the worst, Phantom Menace, is actually my favourite prequel film. The reasons are simple:
- Far less green screen than the other 2.
- Anakin is an annoying kid, yes, but way less annoying than Emo Anakin.
- Liam Neeson.
- Darth Maul.
- Podracing.

And I don't mind the midi-chlorians that much. By the Nine people, they're just indications of Force sensitivity. They don't decide whether you're an awesome Jedi or anything, it has barely if anything to do with the Jedi and I don't see how they could take away so much of their mysticism.

There's no reason to hate them that much, there are far worse things about those movies.

I have a feeling midichlorians is going to be the answer that will pop up the most...

To be honest, I'm indifferent. The films weren't bad by film standars, they just weren't good by Star Wars standards.

My biggest problem with them was that they had so much shit blowing up in the last two installments I could never tell what the hell was going on.

Jar Jar Binks, Pod Races, NOOOOOO!!!!!, Child Anakin.

It looked more futuristic then the originals, but my friend had a good explanation for that "Peace time=Artistic time, War Time=Practicality."

But yeah, Jar Jar Binks.

Because Fans are Fans, they wanted another amazing movie that would change movies for ever they got a good movie that failed to live up to its heritage.

Personally I like them.

When I imagined Anakin pre-Vader, I pictured the perfect Jedi, something akin to Harvey Dent in the Dark Knight. But instead, we got a whiney ***** who questioned his belief system even though he knew Palpatine was a Sith and that Sith are known for being manipulating fuckers!

Jar Jar Binks, Midichlorians, Hayden, Angsty Vader. I didn't mind all the bluescreen, though.

Most of the movies don't have a plot, for one thing. Also, the characters/dialog are terrible.

Bad dialogue (ESPECIALLY YODA, who turns EVERYTHING he says around, which he used to be able to pull of, making it sound good), annoying plots that clearly weren't written back when IV, V and VI came out even though Lucas claims now that he did, over-saturation of CG, shitty acting (or most likely was just shit directing). The only think that I think can be said is that the lightsaber battles kicked huge amounts of ass, and that at least they didn't murder Han Solo's back story, coz they sure managed to ruin Darth Vader's.

OH Speaking of Palpatine, 1-3 actually retconned him, just a tad. He's not a true sith or even truly capable of using the force. His lightning bolts come from mechanisms that drain his life to generate them, which is why he rapidly ages after using them. But they basically made him seem like he was a sith accept showing the rapid aging, but they don't explain it.

Bad acting, the introduction of those stupid gene things and of course, JARJAR.
I didn't like the movies, but I liked the midi chlorian idea. It made sense as to why Jedi were rare after the empire destroyed them, and made sense of why Darth Vader was meant to be so powerful. I hate how people always bring it down to just jar jar binks and bad acting, when it was really just a shitty script (it is seriously hard to be a good actor which such shit dialogue), and Lucas attempting to add a character that would appeal to children. Looking back now, when I was 9 I thought Jar Jar Binks was funny.

Seriously it may be a bit of watching but it's EVERYTHING that is wrong with the star wars movies(I-III). And it's pretty interesting so I'd say it's worth the watch.

THANK YOU! I'm sick of everybody else thinking ROTS was the best... Phantom Menace was the only one that had a decent plot.

I just wish the space battles were made like the originals... I mean, Battle of Endor? Could you ASK for a more epic space battle? And models on strings actually looked REAL, but the CG was just way to bloody obvious... Also I think they lost the family element too with Darth Vader burning his face off and screaming in agony at Obi Wan, and with the ship exploding and watching the poor clone drift off into space...
