I've been playing since Gen I, and honestly, the Gen I games are awful (this isn't counting their Gen III remakes). Easily the worst of the franchise. Every single generation has been an improvement on the last.
It really makes me mad when people practically disown a new generation of Pokémon just because "oh, the designs are shit/unoriginal." A common cite in Gen V was Trubbish, 'cause it's a garbage bag. Like,
are you kidding me? Pokémon has never been the be-all-end-all of great monster design/variety. (Something I love
Digimon for.) Half of Gen I are the most basic designs ever. Though to be fair, it is just the one guy designing these 649+ monsters. Gotta give credit where credit is due.
Personally, my least favorite in terms of Pokémon design is Gen IV, and only really because I can hardly remember any of them. And my favorite is Gen V. There are quite a few that don't, ah, agree with my aesthetic tendencies (Gothitelle is the
ugliest thing since Jynx), but there are a lot of great ones in there, too. Not just in design, but as actual fighters. 5/6 Pokémon in my current team are Gen V!
A lot of Gen I elitists are probably just fused to their nostalgia goggles.

What I get frustrated the most about the newer gen Pokemon is that they usually go for more cutesy-styled Pokemon and less badass looking Pokemon (Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise are fucking cool).
I think that's really just a result of Sugimori's art style shifting. There's a significant difference between how Pikachu looked in 1998 and how it looks now. Though there are plenty of badass 'mons around, I think.
Also, Rotom, the appliance Pokémon, is a Ghost-Type that possesses household appliances. It doesn't
actually look like those things normally [http://img.pokemondb.net/artwork/rotom-normal.jpg]. I dunno if that helps at all, since its appliance forms are still kind of silly.
