Why are the gyms in Pokemon Black/White so painfully easy?

I couldn't help but notice that the gym leaders of the fifth generation of the Pokemon series are utterly unchallenging. The Pokemon of said gym leaders are in comparison to the previous generations complete twats.

The trainers in the gym have, let's say, a Pokemon from level 30. The gym leader of that gym then follows with three pokemon that are respectively lv 29, lv 29 and level 31. Makes me wonder what makes the leader so special given that I can knock out his pokemon with as much effort as the regular trainers. ( I don't know if the levels are correct, I think this was the 5th gym?)

They also seem underleveled compared to the player. Like in the previous example, in my team of 4, my least leveled pokemon was at level 32 and the highest at level 35.

I remember playing a new account for Pokemon Platinum a while back, and the gym leaders there were actually worthy adversaries were I had to really think about my next move, speculate and adapt. It gave me the feeling they became leaders for a reason.

I actually hate to rate a game on basis of comparison, but with Pokemon where it stands, that is pretty much impossible (for me that is). Even though the leaders are more involved with the story, it feels kind of silly when they show up while you are thinking "Where does all this confidence come from? I hope for their sake it doesn't come from their battling skills.".

Did the developers do this purpose?

So, fellow escapist ladies and gentlemen, what do you think?

I think it has to do with how the story is paced in this one. If I remember right in Platinum (diamond/pearl) you had your last showdown with whats-his-dude in between gyms 7 and 8, once you'd beat him and caught your cover legendary the story was pretty much done. In Black/white you don't have the final confrontation until after the Elite 4, and then it opens up the rest of the map for you.

Really? In Platinum I'd always have at least one pokemon of significantly higher level than the leaders. With White their best would usually be at least five levels higher than mine, and that was after battling every trainer I could find. The elite four would've been a real pain if it wasn't for being lucky and having a pokemon designed to beat down each of them (what would I have done without Krookodile?), and I almost lost to Gheitis except for a lucky hit near the end. Never had those problems in Platinum. Maybe you're just getting better.

You were overleveled? Did you grind massively throughout the game? Because by the start of the Elite 4 I'm only around 43-45 and all of their Pokemon are 48-50ish.

Well, I have noticed the average level of Gyms going down, but not to the point that you say- dunno why, maybe for the incoming kids who are trying to get into the series? Kind of a weak explanation to me.

Anyway, it's worth remembering that you're probably much older now than when you started playing, and so you'd obviously have a much easier time beating the leaders now that you know how to grind properly and what strategies work.
