Why are the Star Wars Prequals still canon?

I am just very curious at this because the Star Wars Prequals was so hated that I thought one of the points of this new Trilogy of movies and spin off movies and current canon of the Star Wars universe was so that they can erase the Prequals from Canon?

But no as of the recent Comic Book of Darth Vader 2017 series, the Prequals are still canon, the Comic starts right at that moment where Vader says NOOOOOOOOOOOOO when finding out he killed Padme after he was frankensteind into the Darth Vader Suit. (This is the Comic)

Again I am just a bit perplexed at this? I thought they would retcon the whole prequals now that Disney has the rights? Heck they could have had the opportunity to create a complete new Prequal.

Toys & Merch.

The movies are responsible for 90% of it. The books and comics are not. If they scrubbed the prequels like they scrubbed the expanded universe, they'd have to stop selling that stuff. As much as nerds get their hate boner out for the prequels, they also buy the merch at the exact same time.

Its essentially a perfect example of whiny assholes talking shit til the cows come home, but still paying for the product, so why change based on their whining?

probably because the hated for those films is vastly overevaluated. Not everyone hate those films. actually a lot of people actually liked them. they still get between 6.2 and 7.5 on imdb. They keep them canon because there's no reason for them not to be. they are the direct work of Lucas, so they should be canon.

If things got retconned just because a bunch of people on the internet hated them, then a large number of things in every form of media wouldn't be "canon" anymore.

I have a better question, why do people still fucking care about telling the world how much they hated the prequels?

Cause Lucas wrote them...?

And Episode II and III get a bad rap because of I. I is the one everyone hates and they just project that hate onto the next two. Sure, Anakin in II also gave continued life to the hate, but I mean... Ewoks are stupid, but we still consider VI canon.

Why bother? With renewed interest in SW you will find new people who will buy and watch them. And it's probably just too much of a hassle, I mean, Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope would now be Episode 1 and so on, or they need to remake the first 3. It's just needless confusion to the general public.

Because 80s born Star Wars fans are the worst. What's pain for them is joy for everyone else. That and you're also deleting Clone Wars and Rebels, plus the books, and comics and everything else based on it.

With regards to the prequels... I'm reminded of this immortal quote from Futurama:

"You watched it! You can't unwatch it!"

Otherwise as much as I'm sure the creative minds behind behind the new Star Wars film's love pandering to the rabid fanbase and their hatred of George Lucas, I sincerely doubt they hate him that much.

It's just better to deal with what you have and try and find some new direction going forward instead of wallowing in the past.

This is so true. I like them. A lot of people like them. And besides, the reason the EU isn't canon anymore is largely because it would be impossible to make new movies if they had to fit them in with an EU that has already told so many post-RotJ stories that no stories remain to tell.

It seems you were wrong. I don't know from where you got that idea, but if it wasn't from official announcements, it was from someone's imagination. The main reason to make more Star Wars movies is to make more money, simple as that. The canon is the owner's, and they have decided prequels will still be canon. Do you want to know why? Ask them (and Jar-Jar Binks is one of George Lucas' favorite characters).

Meh, there's a lot of bad in the prequels, but there's good stuff too.
[li]There are some excellent pieces of music on the soundtrack[/li]
[li]Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan. Dude did a fine job, considering.[/li]
[li]So did Iam McDearmid, especially when he gets to voraciously chew the scenery[/li]
[li]Some of the battle scenes are quite neat, like the Darth Maul fight in ep1, the space battle opening of ep3, and some others.[/li]
[li] Despite the overuse of CGI, a lot of which doesn't hold up, there is some admirable creativity in creature, tech and environment design. More so than in the Disney helmed movies, if you ask me.[/li]

If I'm honest, most of the prequels do nothing for me but a big reason I personally want them kept canon is so that Star Wars: The Clone Wars remains canon also. Hayden Christensen owes their writers and Matt Lanter a fruit basket or two for turning his fall to the Dark Side from an obligation to a genuine tragedy.

Considering that there profits from The Clone Wars and Rebel AND aswell the other merch from the prequel, I doubt they will reboot the prequel soon.

I mean yes there are merchs for the EU but it's not as mainstream as the canon stuff. Example, most of the EU figures are only sold in Comicbook stores while you can buy a Rebel activity books for kids in a convient store (seen something similar myself over here).

That's the ticket. There is undoubtedly a clause somewhere that states that the movies and anything else written by Lucas can never be taken out of canon. It'd be the ultimate of ultimate dick moves to disavow the franchise creator's work.

IMDB trends high. Those are terrible IMDB scores.

OT: Merchandising. In terms of tone, style and attention to content, Episode VII goes out of its way to echo the original trilogy (often to the point of slavishly aping it) while quietly brushing the prequels under the carpet. Disney won't disown them, but they're going to be sat at the table in the far corner of the room where all the hated relatives are placed.

Episode II is way worse than Episode I. What if I hate all three for various reasons?

Phantom Menace is still a better movie than Force Awakens. Lets drop that one first before getting rid of the prequels.

I can't really explain why they keep them canon. Possibly because despite the shitty directing and dialogue, they feel it's as good a lead up as any.
As for the me, I think the prequels had a lot of potential. Particularly I loved the Emperor's rise to power.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?
I thought not. It?s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It?s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life? He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.
He became so powerful? the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.
