Tina Fey is a fantastic writer and actor. 30 rock is currently the funniest show currently on television, SNL aint bad, and the previous movies that she starred and wrote in (yes, I enjoyed Baby Mama and Mean Girls) were actually pretty funny.

As for standup, im drawing a blank on good female comedians.

Joan Rivers, Jo Brand? Heard of those?

okay joan rivers is not funny at all, she has the most annoying voice imaginable, she just craps on about menopause and vaginas through her entire act.

I think Claire Hooper and Cal Wilson are funny.

EVERYONE

because listening to a woman complain about vaginas isn't funny, it's obnoxious
Yup.

Not very many try to be comedians and the majority go down that route.

Either:

1. Being drunk is funny
2. Men leave the toilet seat up
3. I have a vagina

None of those things are funny.

Jo Brand is funny. Numerous comediennes have been funny on Mock the Week and stuff but I haven't seem them do stand-up.

More guys will look like idiots than women will. And i don't know maybe a women's comedy stories wouldn't appeal to you as much

I seem to like male stand-up more because they make jokes that I can relate to. Where men complain about remote controls and the dodgy lightbulb in the conservatory, female comedians seem to complain about truely tasking issues. That makes it dull, if it's something serious, and made funny, most of the time it isn't funny, but in the male case, a broken remote or D.I.Y can be funny because it's not really an important issue. Not saying that all female performers are bad, but that is my generalisation.

Dawn French is a pretty good comedian.

I really dislike Catherine Tate. Just like any comedian it depends on their style.

If you watch whose line is it anyway, they pull in a few goood female comedians. Karen Maruyama & Kathy Greenwood especially.

Whoopi Goldburg (spelling?) can be quite funny

There's usually a strong element of aggression in the humor in stand-up comedy.

That makes it more of a "masculine" thing, in the sense that it's closer to stereotypically masculine modes of self-expression than stereotypically feminine modes of self-expression.

Therefore, it's likely that more men will do stand-up comedy than women.
very interesting observation.

i find a similar thing with music, too: a large portion of musicians, especially in rock, hip-hop, and pop music in general, tend to be men, involving subject matter revolving around drugs, violence, rough sex and heartbreak. great examples are bands like blind melon, nine inch nails, pearl jam, oh who am i kidding the list is endless. the ones that stand the test of time all have very powerful, energetic music and stage presense, regardless of your personal opinion of their music. even more optimistic music, like incubus or sublime or led zeppelin, has a touch of sorrow even in their happiest songs.

when female musicians break into the mainstream, they can't seem to convey that same power, no matter how much they try; are britney spears and pink on the same wavelength as, say, pink floyd and nofx? (the only exceptions i can think of right now are heart {with the wilson sisters on vocals and lead guitar} and kittie {an all-girl death metal band from london, ontario}; there are a few more, but time hasn't been so kind to them, except maybe fleetwood mac--ooh, i forgot about them).

maybe it's because i'm a male musician who doesn't quite get the appeal of 99% of hip-hop music, but i feel like men want to make more of am impression with what they do, while women could care less if they make a dent as long as they can shake their ass to it.

but back to the actual topic:
the same kind of reasoning applies: george calin, bill hicks, lenny bruce, richard pryor, etc all aimed to make an impression on the world (even if they thought we were doomed); while most female comedians i see on tv (eg clips from the Just For Laughs festival in montreal, quebec) just ***** about boring things. do they just want to vent? i know a few coked-out sluts who do it all the time (and that's not meant in spite, they really are coked-out sluts with mad, mad issues).

there was one older female comedian, i don't remember her name, who was talking about getting a mammogram, and just the way she told it was hysterical ("great, dorsal fins!" XD); but the rest of her routine wasn't as interesting. most female comedians seem to suffer the same fate.

by the way, i know there are a lot of bad male comedians, too. the per-capita ratio i think would be about 3 good male comedians for every 1 female. dispute me for it, flame me for it, i don't care. it's a message board, discuss!!

OK to be honest there are a few, like Wanda Sykes, but very few. It seems men dominate the comedy world why is this?
Because men dominate nearly everything. Even though most of the hairdressers and fashion designers are women, the majority of the top tier are men.

There's even separate gender divisions for things like billiards.

There are a few professions where the top performers are women like real estate sales, but some would say that because most of the clients are men.

I know this sounds sexist and all, but I don't think I could make this case diplomatically, so I didn't really try.

Maybe a women would have said it better...

What about Tina Fey? Or Amy Poehler...or do you mean standup? I can't think of any great female standup comics...Not being sexist, but I would say men are genetically funnier.
Tina Fey's pretty good.
But I have two words for you: Kathy Griffin.
