It would suck as fps, but if they can make strategy games about gunpowder era you can make strategy games in ww1 era as well..

Strictly speaking, Trench Warfare would make for a bad FPS but possibly a good RPG ('Press X to not get dysentry'...kidding). I guess you could use the 'Cry' engine for this, since that's already designed to have you get shot to pieces by enemies you can't see (again, kidding, but not as much as the last time)

I'm sure it's been mentioned in one of these pages but what would probably be more viable is a WWI combat flight sim. We haven't really had one since Red Baron 3D came and went, and it would be nice to use more modern technology for it. Get a more realistic application of stress on the airframe to make sure you don't break into pieces trying to pull some kind of crazy maneuver, and also have a good approximation of realistic performance problems from every bullet the plane takes. I dunno I just want to see more older-time combat flight sims (i.e. before the days of supersonic flight and guided missiles)

It'd be a boring war to adapt. Despite its appeal in literature, in game what could you do? Shoot a couple of clips, run out of rations then get trench foot?

Bleh.

I personally would love a decent WW1 game, if they could make Battle of the Somme as epic as it sounded, it would be awesome.

It won't happen though.

I think it's mainly because most of WWI was trench warfare.

It could be also because a lot of people don't know enough about WWI to make a game about it, or they just don't care enough.

A better question is why arent there any Korean war games? Or for that matter there should be a game set during the "troubles" of ireland and england, it could be like a splinter cell meets COD4.
That sounds awesome, but would you play as the Irish or English? I'd probably prefer Irish myself.
Because of course it was only the English in Northern Ireland, wasn't it. We shouldn't remember that it was troops from all over the UK that were stationed in NI. Even Irish soldiers, from the Royal Irish, The Royal Irish Rangers, the Ulster Defence Regiment...

Or the Scotts, Welshmen and many other nationalities that fought the Republican Terrorists to protect the will of the people of Northern Ireland.

To be fair, a WWI game would be great. The trenches would make great gaming mechanics and the weapons would be less easy, making for a much harder war game.

With modern graphics, it would be easy to make a very, very, very dirty game. like mud is everywhere and your happy to see something 100 yards away when the dust settles after some artilary fire...

You couldn't make this a ww2 like game but something more like a survival horror game just without supernatural elements.
You are in a trench so you might as well get to know your buddys and have some character developemend and certainly some losses.
The action would have to be tuned in a way that survival is very important, not like a quickloard orgy. Few checkpoints would be one way but a lame one. Maybe something creative like everytime you die your character ages one year so you start the game as a young lad and if you are not carefull enough you end it as old broken guy who saw saw the next generation slagtered away while miracoulusly surviving the hell.

eh he he it was all of ireland during the troubles northern ireland was created after the civil war then even then it was divided in half.

the main reason it a game wouldnt be made about it is because it piss of alot of people and it would bring back memories we try to forget

Funny you lot should mention this as WW1 actually eased the growing tensions in ireland (or at least it did at first)

I find it hilarious people are saying WWI would be boring....uhh yeah any war game would be boring if you simulated everyday life. Like the Battle of Stalingrad for instance how much fun would it be to play as the Soviets and eat dead bodies or rats while waiting for the next offensive? Not much. The Battle of Guadalcanal how much fun would it be to be a US Marine and try to conserve your last can of spam? Oh Vietnam how much fun would it be to sit in a fuckin' foxhole for Night Patrol and nothing happens? Tons of fun.

To be honest people who say WWI wouldn't be entertaining are using ludicrous examples as the war was highly mobile during 1914 and also during the German Offensive of 1918 which led them back into artillery range of Paris. A game could be quite successful even using trench warfare with you going over the top or even being bombarded to hell to all of a sudden having an enemy soldier jump on top of you as you are trying to regain your composure after the bombardment.

yea i know we thought by showing our support the british would consider home rule buut that didnt happen but even so it was good as each side loyalist and republican fought beside each other
tho after the war i mean we were just ignored and thats wat started it.

JESUS!!! DON'T U GUYS KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WW1??????

ok... lets take some facts:

first, trench warfare was just on the western front, and the also had battles in cities like mons, villers and some more i don't remember..

on the eastern front (russians vs germans) they fighted on open battlefield, almost NO trenches (maybe some near the borders to defend against HUGE attack waves)

and the also fighted in africa (no trenches at all) with much machine-gun fire on open desert fields

and they also fighted much on the sea, with huge battleship fights and u-boat fights

and the last thing that i can remember so far: battles with planes, bombers and fighter planes (Anti-Air guns was theyr weakness [ofcourse])

SO NOW U MIGHT STOP SAYING THAT ALL WAS ABOUT STAYING IN A TRENCH AND DIE, CUZ THEY DIDN'T, THEY FOUGHT TO THEIR DEATH (most died of artillery, gas, rats, starvation, etc.)

sorry for my bad english, i'm from norway

I'm sure they could come up with something similar to the first couple Medal of Honor, but then what would be the difference? The weapons?
