Why are there saddles in My Little Pony?

Friends, Bronies, not necessarily countrymen, lend me your ears. I believe we must discuss something with potentially disturbing undertones, and that is the subject of saddles in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Why are they there? They have no humans, no riders of any sort; so why do they all own saddles? Some believe that these saddles are the pony equivalent of bondage equipment, but I'm not so sure. So, my fellow Bronies, what are your thoughts on saddles in My Little Pony?

Well, Twilight wore hers to get ready for Winter Wrap-up. I'd imagine they're kind of like pony-coats.

Uh... did we REALLY need another pony topic right now?

There are three other active topics right now, the non-pony fans are going to start getting annoyed at this.

This type of discussion should really be reserved for the group.

OT: You're thinking about it to hard. ALOT of things in that show don't make sense.

Maybe there are more little dragons that ride them like the one that follows twlight around.

Or maybe the goblins/trolls/whatever ride them?

No one made you click on this thread, read my original post, type your response, enter the little squiggly number thingy, and click "post". And if someone did, please give me your address so I can call the authorities, clearly you're being forced to do this against your will.

He is right. Pony threads are taking over the recent posts notifier and it's making me descend into a black pit of apoplectic rage. Also clothing. They wear it as a replacement for clothing when called for. Now stop over thinking a saccharine kids show and do something productive -.-

I think they use them as clothes, though they might have special saddles for bondage too. I don't know. _>

It's because in the 80's cartoon, there were humans that the ponies played and went on adventures with.

Best guess? Fashion accessories and like someone else already said, the equivalent of coats. That said, it could be worse. Some of the original concept art has bridles and reins.

'Start' getting annoyed?

I would laugh if it didn't make me a little sad to think about.

If you can hammer it into people's heads to keep things to generally where they belong I will give you a free game of choice on steam.
So far pony lovers seem clinically incapable of learning this lesson, it must be unlike every other interest a person can have, in that it causes you to thrust it in to every single subject no matter how unrelated or unimportant.

Just to make sure I am as hypocritical as I am grouchy: I am actually here to talk about the relative differences in thistle species within the English countryside and their collective positive and negative effects on less hardy insect and plant species.

Considering that they're essentially nude most of the time, the only reason to wear anything is either to keep warm or because it's part of their fashion/style. And, you know, horse blankets aren't that cute, so we can't have those in the show.
It's hardly uncommon for cartoons and television to sacrifice good sense if it means having the characters look good. Ungodly cold winters? A waist-length jacket and maybe a hat is all you need, with mittens for the girls. Unless it's for comedy purposes, then somebody will be wrapped in housing insulation.

I agree the threads discussing the show as a concept and the associated fandom are getting old. Yes, it's odd that we like it, you want a medal? But this type of thread is about the show itself. That's different.

I don't see why we should have to remain confined in our little corner of The Escapist (which is, in fact, crowded to the point of bending space-time with sheer density) to talk about something we like, and there's nothing about this topic that is inappropriate. This is Off Topic after all. And the greater forums offer us a bigger space and a more rigid format, so we can expand on our thoughts without tens of other topics and conversations getting in the way.

Besides, there's probably not even as many of these as you think, it's just confirmation bias making it seem like there are.

Ahh how true. We don't spam the forums as you think, that may have happened at the beginning of summer. But the masses were finding the show at that point, so it was bound to seem like they're everywhere. And though this thread is different in it's question, still pony but it shouldn't matter. This site literally could of been torn asunder if it wasn't for the man that made the MLP FIM group for us to hang out at.

So Versuvius, be happy it's so. Cause you probably wouldn't still be around. So there 4-5 threads of it right now. It's not a tidal wave, just a wave in the ocean like any other. And it's certainly a healthy break for the other threads that have been done a thousand fold over.

As for the saddles...... defiantly just fashion. Theres no real practical use for them, Spikes the only one we've ever seen really ride atop one of the ponies. Thus fashion, Rarity agrees.

Yeah, they are essentially a fashion statement of some kind. Why saddles though? Because they're recognizable by kids as something a pony would wear.

That's my best guess.

Isn't there a scene where spike is going through a drawer, pulls out one of Twilight's saddles and blushes? Clearly there are some subtleties here that we humans do not understand.

I always thought they were for fashion but is that not it? What else could they be used for........... On second thought I probably shouldn't think that hard about it >.>
