Why are trolls such an issue?

After reading the 'Troll Slaying the E-Z way thread' (no hyperlink, it's at the top of the stckied topics goddammit!) I began to wonder - what, really, is the harm in trolls?

Before you raise your arms, consider this:

Spammers: People who post the same tired message over and over again. See: The _oo__oo_ troll
Advertising Bots: Bots that create accounts simply to robotically advertise a product. See: most comments in a Cracked article.
Flamers: Face it, you've done it. You've flamed someone before, thus you have at one point been a flamer. See: you, at least once.

Now, let's look at the most common definition of a troll. Bear in mind this is trolls on The Escapist:

Troll: Someone who posts a topic with obvious intent to cause outrage.

Now, considering most trolls limit themselves to posting topics, (that is, they don't hack) what is the harm in responding? Or, more importantly, what is the point of calling anyone with a slightly outlandish opinion a troll? Because the way I see it, it's just another was of provoking discussion. They're not flaming anyone in particular (See 'Flamers', also 'You, at least once') and it is just another way to begin a discussion about a certain topic. In many ways, it's better - once you have a viewpoint you are strongly opposed to, it is easier to argue against it.

So, my question is this: what is the harm in troll topic-starters?
Bonus question: why are people so quick to call people with a strong opinion about something a troll?

People are afraid that their flimsy reality is about to get shattered.

That's why you see a lot of opposition to "more outlandish" opinions in less civilized places.

But, I thought that the Escapist was supposed to be the 'Lighthouse of Alexandria' of the internet?

But, amidst the 'Report and Move On's and the 'Troll's, I've seen some of the best arguements about games on this site.

Which is true there have been plenty of good arguments here. But then there's people like OucastBOS who tricks people into giving him sympathy by posing as other people and creating several accounts to make it seem real.

They're just annoying. They create an unpleasant and hostile environment, which isn't exactly the way I'd like to spend my time on the Escapist. Plus, if trolling was allowed then things would get out of hand very fast.

Have you ever seen a forum overrun by trolls? I visited a forum for one of my favorite bands and it was constant porn links and idiots. Trolls just want attention and it gets old. Their job is to annoy people and while it's fun to them, it's not fun to us.

I hate trolls. They keep stabbing my hobits.

There's no harm, but people get angry. Simple as that, actually.

Trolls make crappy movies...not those trolls oh okay

well I think they cause outrage for mere enjoyment and flood the topics with "I think Obama is a nazi in disguise hurhurhur" topics which wrecks the feel of the forums. That the good stuff is watered down with poorly educated guesses meant for someone to loose their temper

They're just annoying. They usually don't cause harm, but they clutter up the forum.

It isn't and never was.

There's something that happens to many nerd communities when they get big enough. Elitism, hordes of pseudo-intellectuals, and so on.

Sure, some posters are rather intelligent and can lead interesting discussion (I'm not one of them). Some are famous attention whores, which is awwwright in most cases - MaxTheReaper was at least mildly amusing, and I will not be mentioning any recent ones who get rather more annoying at times. Some are wanna-be attention whores, which is just annoying.

Aside from that, there's nothing good. Your average thread is just people crying out their opinions, with a few extra troll accusations thrown in just in case, and maybe something resembling a debate going on between 2-3 posters. It's not a discussion, it's not even a public forum. It's just people crying out their ignorant opinions without even bothering to read, or contribute to, the thread in question, and we're all guilty of this here in different degrees.

And then there are the pedo/furry/whatever hunts, which are even funnier.

4chan and Something Awful are no worse than Escapist, despite clueless people pretending that 4chan is solely represented by /b/tards and that there aren't many boards there, some often featuring interesting things.

Call me a troll, but any post that has more than 3 rows strikes me as a pseudo-intelectual.

Trolling isn't the same as spamming and advertising.

Legitimate opinions can and do, however, get labeled as trolling by conservative tards who are afraid of getting their world view shattered.

It's the intent. You say they are just trying to find another way to provoke discussion but it's more than that. It's the phrasing and the context. Your thread here could be troll worthy, but it's phrased intelligently, makes use of actual grammar, and presents an argument to be supported or derided.

A troll would take certain other options.

The well known:

LOL, TROLIONG IDS OFG TEH AW3SEOMK3! UJR ALL FAGBA S FOR NOT OLKNI TROL;LS!!!!11!!!!!!!

(That physically hurt)

The more seductive:

My opinion is that trolling is a legitimate way to express my opinion on an issue, as supported by the First Amendment, and so I would consider anyone who doesn't share this opinion to be unpatriotic and not worthy of my time.

(It appears to be well reasoned and a cause for argument, but the reference to the First Amendment, the inflammatory statement that you are not considered worth anything if you disagree at all etc)

And of course:

This forums hates freedom! They are socialist cunts who always try to destroy our liberty! Who else agrees with me that the mods are faggots!

(Direct assault on the moderators, assertion that any member of this site who doesn't subscribe to their logic is apparently a liberal who hates freedom, and a call to arms for some reason, provoking people directly with a question which 'needs' to be answered)

There's nothing wrong with starting a debate, there is something wrong with provoking people for no point. There can be just as much fun in reasoned debate (I would say more so) than in pointless trolling.

Are you aware of what "pseudo-intellectual" means?

1.
a person exhibiting intellectual pretensions that have no basis in sound scholarship.
2.
a person who pretends an interest in intellectual matters for reasons of status.

My posts are rather fat, I agree. But I'm a ranter and that's what I do. I rant. And there's no such thing as a short rant.

Now one-liners, that's another problem plaguing this place and it could very much be put in the "wanna-be attention whore" list.

Cause it can get ridiculously irritating, it's not that bad when it's controlled by the mods, but if it's not checked then it starts becoming more commonplace, which people don't really want to read all the time. But to be fair, some of them are actually alright.
