Why are we so obsessed with HD?

All I hear nowadays is "DAMN! This game looks so realistic!" Quite a few games that have poor design choices, have been praised, simply because of it's graphics. *cough* Farcry 2 *cough* That, and I'm hearing tons of people say "I'd buy a Wii if it was HD.", screw you. So much of this gaming generation is so concerned with a game looking gorgeous, graphics should be the wrapping, not the actual present. Someone mind filling me in on just WHY graphics are so God dang important?

It purrty.

Seriously. Look is half of the fun and all of it, to some people.

I know it's at least a quarter or a half for me.

Purty...

I like cutscenes. I like to be impressed by visuals, though why anybody would expect HD on a Wii is beyond me. Good graphics send immersion levels through the roof when you play a free-roaming RPG, and in games such as Mass Effect, you really can sit there and be wowed by them.

I wouldn't say I was HD obsessed, but I do love my pretty things.

And there's nothing wrong with that, but I know a few people who won't buy a game unless the graphics work the console like a slave driver.

People like to the shiny pixels and objects glaring into their faces..and if you get to into that then you become a person who hates anything that doesn't shine and sparkle like a character from Twilight in the sun.

Is it me or HD gaming has been around for sometime for PC gamers?
Because you can always upgrade your graphics card, and with Crysis, what else can be said about how real it looks? With a console, we take what the companies give us, and while a few have pushed the graphics to their limit like God of War 3, there's only so much it can do.

Because we use our sense of sight more than any other one in a game. It also helps immersiveness. Its also pretty to look at like faceless said. What else is there? Did you really not know the anwswer to this one?

I'm not obsessed with it, but I needed a new TV anyways (read: old one broke, NEEDED new one) so I got an HD anyways. I gotta say, it's noticeably better looking and I love it, but I'm not stuck up about having HD. I'd get a Wii if its games appealed to me, but I tried shooters on it and didn't much like them.

HD didn't really bring on the "damn that's so realistic".

I remember thinking the very same thing about PS2 games when comparing them to PS1 games.

Call me crazy but I thought Far Cry Instincts looked better. Atleast it was colourful and I preferred the Predator gameplay to what Far cry 2 turned out to be.

Some people though, they just like things because they look pretty. As well as looking more up to date with what is new.

HD is awesomely awesome but it wouldn't affect my decision to buy something.

I wouldn't turn down the Wii for lack of it and i didn't buy a PS3 for it.
I rarely use HD for my PS3, it just makes a nice difference occasionally :p

We've aquired a taste for HD now and nothing will come between us and our next meal.

I have no problem with the graphics of last-gen games, but I also love the HD graphics of today and I wouldn't want to part with them.

Really? I enjoyed Far Cry 2 for the gameplay.

Anyway, graphics get better because it's more interesting to look at. Need for Speed : High Stakes, for example, was a great game. But I don't want to go back to it simply because the graphics are outdated. (Oh, and it doesn't run very good on windows 7 either. (or XP, or vista, or basically anything past '98.))

"We?" Speak for yourself.

Although I can see why people would like it (shiny things), it doesn't really appeal to me that much. That being said, it's not like I've had a lot of experience with it. And I'm fine with that.

First of all, pretty games aren't excused for being bad games... Secondly, HD and graphics are two -very- different things with different advantages to gameplay. (admittedly it's mostly vistual, BUT...)

HD allows more content to be on screen at once. You can see further, see more enemies, more of the road, know that corner's coming before you hit it, see that hole before you swing the club. But also, it allows HUDs to shrink down meaning they occupy less of the screen and obscure less of the action.

Graphics allow things such as hiding in dynamic shadows in stealth games, jumping at your own shadow in horror games and recognising the difference between friend and foe in action games. In sports games it also means you get to see your favourite stars.

Now... I'm not pretending the main advantages aren't "purtyness", but my Dragon Age quickbar can't fit 20 things on it in 800 x 600.

Well, I haven't really played FarCry 2, just heard a lot of bad things about it from friends/reviews/etc. Namely the AI's accuracy from long-range. I simply named it because it's the only one I can think of.
