Developers who primarily focus on the aesthetics never think on the long-term success. They're doomed to fail.
EDIT: As an example, which are the most popular franchise games on the market right now? Pokemon and Warcraft. Neither of those carry stellar graphics.
No reason to not expect better graphics with better technology. I rarely see the graphics entirely remove the story so there's no real reason for me to be against them.
I'd tell ya if there were actully a reason. HD isnt a important factor in a video game rather the game it self.
I still play my PS2 with a 20 year old TV hooked up right next to my 360. I'm going to play FF8 here shortly with my 360's power button in the off position.
All I hear nowadays is "DAMN! This game looks so realistic!" Quite a few games that have poor design choices, have been praised, simply because of it's graphics. *cough* Farcry 2 *cough* That, and I'm hearing tons of people say "I'd buy a Wii if it was HD.", screw you. So much of this gaming generation is so concerned with a game looking gorgeous, graphics should be the wrapping, not the actual present. Someone mind filling me in on just WHY graphics are so God dang important?
Hello mr OP, it seems you made a GIANT mistake in your posting, the reason we want Wii HD, is not because of the graphics, but the freaking content in the games, HALF THE CONTENT IN WII PORTS ARE TAKEN OUT BECAUSE OF IT'S LACK OF GRAPHICAL CAPABILITIES AND OVERALL ENGINE POWER.
Now rethink your post, and create a new point not including the Wii HD. I do however agree with your point that graphics aren't everything and Farcry 2 sucked balls.
The appeal in HD however (non Wii HD, thats just a overall wii upgrade so it can contend performance wise with the 360, not like HD tv, which is what I think your talking about) is that it simply looks better. Thats it end of story.
HD if anything just drives up prices, It's the difference between seeing a sweat bead fall of the head of some fat guy with man tits with a HD nipple on and just seeing a pink glistening blob with boobs.
We're not obsessed with it, you're just generalising.
To be blunt, you wont notice a difference with a lot of the latest high quality monitors that use DVI anyway and there is a difference between HD and SD of course, but that's mostly with higher resolutions. Anyway, time for Pink Floyd.
I couldn't give a rats about HD, honestly. I run all my consoles on an ancient TV I bought second hand nearly 10 years ago and it's always been good enough for me, although I'm just now being tempted to upgrade due to the edges of the screen being cut off when I play Muramasa. I'm not a graphics whore- for me what you do with your graphics is more important than how powerful they are and even for graphics-intense games a minor difference in detail isn't worth splitting hairs over as long as I can still see what's going on clearly.
If I could play Tetris with somehow mind blowing graphics, I think that is the day I would witness, if not caress, the face of God. However, I agree completely with your point on graphics merely being a wrapper.
Okay well i know this thread is just talking about the graphics (so this is really has nothing to do with it (this being what i was laughing at)) but the Wii has out of all the systems (PC, 360, PS3 and itself) THE MOST shittiest games on it (yes some ARE good but I`ve seen mostly shitty games) while 360, PS3, and PC have only some shitty games (and yes I realize thats just all opinion) but when you look at games like Imagine: Babies.....well you know (and so I don`t come out looking like a bad guy I`d buy a Wii myself if I had the money or money to spare, there are a few games on the Wii, I really wanna play)
....................
You think I'm the type to buy crap games on my primary system? You think I'm one of those Mini-game people?
Ive wasted a lot of money on suppose-to-be great games on the Xbox 360 and those titles were "Shitty" as you like to say. And I've seen and played crap after crap on the Xbox 360.
There's more than the spoiler has, but the graphics are fine and the gameplay is great on those in the spoiler.
The Wii has given me Battalion Wars 2, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn,Madworld,House of the Dead Overkill,Lots of Great WiiWare titles, Super Mario Galaxy, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy. And the graphics are good enough for me to enjoy.
I like HD for First-Person shooters. Primarily for Bad Company 2, now that my friend has been letting me use his PS3. Making those 500-meter headshots wouldn't be the same without HD.
Um... really? It's simple. It looks better. As long as the content of the title stands up great then I'm all for it. Give me a Bioshock that looks like Crysis and I'm sold. I don't really play my Wii because it looks super shit on HDTV's.
I lawled at this, also personally I don`t know why but HD movies make me more motion sickness then Cloverfield did (and I didnt get motion sickness from Cloverfield)
If you have a plasma tv the odds are it's not the movies, but the tv that's giving you motion sickness. As far as everything going HD and widescreen, televisions now are widescreen native. The Wii is not, so everything gets stretched and side to side movements can get exaggerated, other than that I can't think of any reason to hate the Wii other than there really not being a ton of games on it I want to play.

I hate HD. I had to get an HD tv because new games were looking like shit to the point of being nearly unplayable, literally I couldn't see enemies movements in games like God of War so I couldn't tell when they were attacking and thus I'd die, and now all my ps2 games look like someone beat them with the shitty stick. I think that pisses me off more then the cost of the TV which is finnicky and fiddly as FUCK. Why are my beloved PS2 games which I probably play more then any of the expensive as fuck HD shit now rendered terrible quality? Is it that hard to make a TV display something we'd had perfect for generations?
And here again, the problem is not the TV but that the games and system aren't rendering picture in widescreen. I'm also guessing you went from something around 30 inches to somewhere around 50. The larger the screen the worse polygonal objects are going to look because they have to be made larger to cover the larger screen area, it's not like the PS2 can change resolutions.
i like good graphics. however, dont care if they are perfect. if the game has good artistic styling it doesnt really need good graphics (ie... warcraft 3, mario, ect). if they go for realistic graphics though it has to be very realistic.
