For me, I think it started around when 9-11 hit, I was only a kid at the time, and knew very little about how the world worked...
The year after that, I learned about the Holocaust, and from there, it was all downhill.
Now, I KNOW I shouldn't be so cynical, and that "not all people are evil blah blah blah".
The reason I dislike humanity is because I know what they are capable of, not what they are like. But that's just me...

You can't lose faith in humanity. Losing faith in Homo Sapien, however.... entirely possible.
Now, why people insist on putting faith into anything to begin with, is beyond me. I'd rather put my energy to use actually getting something done, rather than relying on an entire species to do it for me.

I lost faith in humanity because I spilt breakfast down myself this morning. But I love a runny egg with my bacon, so what can I do????
A small number of people clearly mean ALL people are the same! Everyone should be hated!!1!
Also there was a story about a guy who buried his girlfriend alive in the woods near my house. :/ She dug herself out by thinking of her son to give her the strength. Stories like that make me feel both sad that happened to her and happy she's alive.
