Why aren't more realistic and serious animated movies being made?

Anyways, we like to remember our childhood as full of awesome, so when we see the new movies without nostalgia, we get this lovely does of reality and criticism. We look at these new films with contempt, scoffing,"BAH! These children have NO idea how crappy their lives are, we had it SO much better!"
We try and idolize the films we remember best, trying to prove otherwise this stigma, and try and prove that animated films are not just for kids by attending the good ones.

i remember fights, and i remember somebody severing a head and putting it in a box

Millennium Actress is pretty good. It's by the same director as Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue and Paprika.

Grave of the Fireflies is good if you want to depress yourself.

I agree with you there Spirited Away is not a childs film.

OP: There are loads of serious animated films, its just that western audiences aren't ready to accept they're for adults, much like they often don't accept video games aren't just for kids.

Admittedly, it doesn't have the realistic elements that you want, and while I was shown it as a teenager it isn't aimed at children.

It's the story of what happens to an old couple during a nuclear war and the fallout after that.

Animated films and, more notably still, animated TV shows can get away with things that mainstream live action flicks cannot because they are "for kids".

The best bits in animated films succintly describe things in one scene that many live action films take two hours to say. Think of the scene in "Bambi" where Bambi wanders through the forest after her mother dies. It says in one scene that one day your parents will be gone and you'll have to deal with it. It's brilliant.

Oh yeah, and OT: "Grave Of The Fireflies". Hardly a kids' film.

Can I Add "Belleville Rendez-Vous" the this? critically acclaimed French Surrealist film with slightly tongue in cheek class divide overtones and the Mafia (and a kidnapping for good measure) that made the BBC Christmas day broadcast 2003 or 2004.

a great back story for almost all of the big characters is set up throughout the film, and the best part? there are about 6 lines in the whole film of coherent necessary dialogue.

Definitely worth a watch, and has a very catchy theme tune!

Yes it was. The prince was infected with a disease that made black spots appear on his arms, and the head of the forest god or whatever the hell it was got cut off and put in a box.

While I'm not big on anime, I did see one called "Perfect Blue" that was pretty much about a pop start and her stalker who essentially wanted to "become" her. If I recall correctly, it could have easily been a live action movie.

They actually intended to make it live-action but couldn't handle the special effects at the time.

Quite a lot of anime movies could easily be seen as not just for kids. Especially stuff by Studio Ghibli.

Well its not an animated movie but the Spawn T.V series was pretty adult though honestly rule one makes no sense. There are adult live action films that don't exactly border on realism. Also, if you were going for realistic proportions and such then... what is the point? just shoot it live action.

In the end it should matter about the overall style, it should matter about the plot. Also swearing does not mean its for adults, a cartoon can be adult without swearing along with live action films.

It ain't for kids, isn't sci-fi, portrays realistic people in realistic proportions and is terribly sad. - Which reminds me, Grave of the Fireflies.
