Why aren't there more dogfighting games that aren't sims?

Never got into arcadey flight games really, but I do love a good sim (still waiting on Cliffs of Dover, it's only been delayed as many times in six months as DNF was during it's entire development. If you're looking for a good stick, I got the Saitek AV8R-01 last Christmas, it works amazingly well (plus it's got that cover switch so you can feel like a total badass).

Whilst watching Battlestar Gallactica for the first time recently I suddenly had the desire to play all of my old games from this genre. Tie Fighter, X-Wing, Freelancer (though this doesn't support joysticks). Also, I bought Freespace 1 & 2 and Descent 1,2 & 3 in GoG's recent sale.

I should be good for a while. But I too have wondered where this entire genre disappeared to when I was so willing to throw my money at the publishers so often (and I burned through half a dozen joysticks in those days too).

I'm still looking for my copy of Terminal Velocity (or somewhere selling it digitally). I remember liking that as a kid too.

Oh, that kind of dog fighting.

I was expecting something completely different.
I was just thinking the exact same thing. I was beginning to wonder which expansion pack for The Sims included dog fights :p
