Hip-hop really is a male dominated culture, but the same can be said for most music. That doesn't detract from the fact that there's some amazing chick rappers out there. For example:

Maybe becaue it's harder to hypersexualise a rapper like all mainstream female artists must be, so most stay underground.

Well, rapping (in my experience) talks a lot about sex and money and how awesome you are. Since we're a people of many double standards, a woman talking about her extremely prolific sexual experience would make her seem less respectable, whereas for some reason it makes men seem like they're amazing.

Then again, perhaps asking me isn't a great idea. I'm not a huge fan of rap.

I remember for the longest time over here Missy Elliot was on the television, so it wasn't that rare.

I was wondering if this was a similar thing to why there aren't many (particularly recognised) female comedians.

Both rap and comedy is about standing up in front of a lot of people and showing how witty and awesome you are, basically. Which may link in to the male competitive/show off/look better than other males/get attention from females impulse. Whereas biologically, women just need to mill around and look fertile, so they don't have that much of a desire to do the same, or the same drive that makes them good at it.

Maybe? Perhaps?
Good call. In both cases, I would say a good portion of the female comedians and female rappers are lesbians. (Rosie O'Donnell, Ellen DeGeneres, Paula Poundstone [who says that she is asexual, not a lesbian, but whatever] were all stand up comedians. In the rap game, there have been rumors of Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott being lesbians, though they have not necessarily been confirmed.)
Whooooa, seriously? Women are biologically less talented or funny? Only lesbians are funny? Sorry, but that's kinda offensive. You don't think it's possible that it's the incredible societal pressures that men have put on women to be demure and quiet for thousands of years that accounts for this? You don't think that maybe the fact that Rap and Comedy has been a "Boys club" for years and that many women comedians and rappers face tons of hostility from male co-workers or peers? No, it must be that women are biologically boring and uncreative.

Got nothing to contribute to this discussion, but I thought I'd post this;

Skip forward 20 seconds if you want to. Annoying intro.
That's Natalie Portman!?

Damnnnn....

I have found some new respect for her.

Rape is most of the time more a power trip then the actual sexual act.
Its alot easier for a male to overpower a girl then the otherway around.
Also mostly guy's (straight or gay) dont report getting raped.
Fear of being laughed at or not being believed.
Not sure if trolling, or just mistaken...

Uh, this thread is about Rappers. Not Rapers (which isn't really a word). Rap music, not rape.

Just wondering, I mean sure I know there are less females in other genres of music, such as metal

But I mean female rappers seem to be a very rare thing, at least in the mainstream

is it because the whole culture associated with rap/hip-hop is male dominated? that a female rapper just doesnt sound as good?

any Ideas?
the first rap song to hit the top 40 was by BLONDIE!!!

also if you listen to modern rap, it really sounds like a bunch of guys getting really defensive about their sexuality (come on, you know it's true)and showing off cars and money so i'm not sure why a woman would bother rapping when she could sing.

Used to be a huge rap fan. But no there are still there, Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim, in the mainstream at least. It's just they're annoying and just copy male styles. But then again that's the whole genre, copying the same thing over and over again and again, hence why I stopped listening since unique stuff is hard to find.
