Why can't FPS's get reloading right?

What's with FPS's and reloading guns? On cod4, for example, when you reload you have to do the whole process in one go instead of in a few stages. It's just annoying in multiplayer when you start to reload, realize you're not safe, have to cancel it, and then when you resume reloading you start from the beginning even if you already dropped the clip to the floor, or maybe even inserted a new clip but failed to pull the firing pin! The timing could be a matter of life or death. Is it just to hard to program clever reloading? What do you think? Has reloading like this ever resulted in your untimely demise?

I don't really care, because when it comes down to it, how does your character only find clips with full ammo in the clip? I never see the character taking bullets out of other clips and putting them into a few clips.

happens to me all the time, but it works both ways too... if you have a few bullets left and you start reloading, then run around a corner into someone, the clever reloading system you're talking about would mean that if you cancelled it to run back around the corner... or something... you wouldn't have any means of defending yourself until you had reloaded... at least this way you can still get in some knee-jerk reaction kills if you're not completely empty...

then Vrex paused realising that if he said what he was about to say this would offically mean he will have beaten the dead horse one too many times. His fingers shook as he reached for the keys before him, they shone an eerie glow that gave the effect of a seductive light. The thrill of knowing what he was doing he allowed to enter him,
I shouldn't be doing this, he thought frowning in frustration.
He continued to question whether or not he should say what he was about to say and if peope would even notice, after all he had been saying it for a good long while and no one payed in any more attention. The keyboard beckoned to him telling him to type away.. he could only stare in grim facination. He wanted the keyboard... he NEEDED to type those letters, now more than anything he needed to type those letters.
What the hell, he thought, a man is a fool to fight his own desires.
So after a final reflective pause he finally began typing:

....The Halo series has always been one of the best games for quick reload times.

Then he waited for the response.
Did I really say it, he asked himself pensivley.
Yes I believe I did and it feels good to tell the truth, he stubbornly reminded himself.

I have been the victim of URD on more than one occasion. Single or multi it doesn't matter. Although the devs aren't to blame for it. I should know how long it takes to reload. I should be able to keep an eye on my ammo. So how can I blame the devs when it is clearly not thier fault that I suck?

I never found it that much of an issue actually. Though a lean function in more games would be appreciated.

"You'r a Halo fanboy, aren't you, Vrex?"

true enough... i suppose reloadings included more for realism than dev teams wanting us to get frustrated (after all... a gun that doesn't need to be reloaded? bah!)... its games like halo that minimalise the inconvenience without sacrafising the realism... and i'm talking about the guns there, not any of the actual content of the games...

The Macapus looked at the above text. His eyes strained with disbelief as he looked at the words. Could it be? A great burden was lifted from his shoulders. He dusted of his Halo disk proudly, un-afraid to play it. He selected "Play Halo 3" with pride, no longer afraid to use his real gamertag. He logged in and selected his hard drive. His Xbox whirled with amazement as it realized his descision. Finaly!, Light! The menu screen. Macapus hastily selects "Multiplayer!" Empowered by the knowledge he is not the only sentient being in the halo series, he loads his battle rifle, selects "team slayer," enpowered with the knowledge he is not alone. The Macapus feels content...

A realistic reloading system would be more appreciable than "oops, here we go again".

I dropped that magazine and I was about to shoot you, but you stepped and now I had to bop you one... why am I unloading a magazine again?

I can't say I've ever noticed reloading to be a problem. Just make sure you always have a full clip and you'll be fine, I'm sure.

The shock came only briefly for Vrex when he saw the response typed before him. He raised an eyebrow quizzically. The shock of the impact quickly vanished when he realised that this outcome was not entirely unexpected. So he thought for a moment about what to say next. He realised quickly that his answer would need to be brief. The question was before him, all he needed now was an answer. He stopped wondering and developed an accute sense of pride in his anwser. With no regrets Vrex turned to the keyboard and typed his answer smiling with a sense of pride.

..why yes I guess I am.

IDK about COD, but in TF2 you can stop reloading by shotting or swiching weapons in the middle.

The main reason I can think of is realism. However the only reloading "stage" I could think of is removing the empty magazine, *pause* (say you have to knife a dude), then continue by loading a full magazine. I'm not an armourer though.

It would be needlessly frustrating.

thats assuming the game is realistic enough to have the bullet in the chamber... i dunno, i'm sort of basing my fps knowledge off the original perfect dark...
