1.Try playing the path or punumbra (There on steam).
2.Watch the birds (not scary at first then about half way it does get so scary the nightmare contiues after the film has finished).
3.Games are not scary anymore because it's lost the main ingreediant and they now call a large amount of gore scary maby sickening but not scary.

hope i could help :D

Now With the resent releases of horror game i thought it was time that i went off the RTS genre for a while and went back into Survival horror!

My first game i tryed was Dead Space, i had heard a few good rumours about this game and that it had alot of "O s*** moments" now playing through the game i wasn't scared at all the only thing that did scare me was getting to the last checkpoint withought dying due to the amount of enemys it was throwing at me

The second game was the very famous RE5 which i played all the Resident evil series and they all (if only at one point) scared me..s***less...But i was met with bosses i knew should be scary but they weren't and a story that was ruined due to the 32 trailers on Gametrailers.com

Now these two game were recomened to be the scariest! and i was met with failure..could someone recomend a good horror game and tell me why these game have been hyped up to be scary but they aren't?
May I suggest The Path [http://tale-of-tales.com/ThePath/]? It is rather creepy and sells for a scant ten dollars, I believe.

Edit:
He beat me to my suggestion, damn it.

The last thing in a game that I actually dreaded was that damn spider hand thing in OOT that grabbed you and took you back to the start of the level. Every encounter was a pants wettingly tense scene of visceral violence as I dispatched the most dreaded enemy I had ever faced.

Now I've become desensitized to everything, so games like Bioshock and Condemned don't bother me on a psychological level. Any enemy encounter is simply "oh, more people to murder". Something that brought this to the forefront is when I was playing and my mom was watching for a few moments because I had been rambling about how good it was. She left after I beat a man to death in full HD with a wrench, his bloody corpse spiraling the side as I gave him one last whack to the head. She found it immensely disturbing and unsettling, I was more or less apathetic to this instance of cranial destruction.

So, there you go. Nothing is scary anymore because videogames have desenstitised us to violence. Oh well.
It's not even violence that makes a game scary, though. I mean, in Fatal Frame II you take pictures of spirits to 'kill' them. Sure the game is pretty graphic in some parts, but it's not like you run around braining people with a wrench. There's a severe lack of psychological horror games and it sucks.

Shame on you for playing Resi:5 and expecting horror. It's well known that it's just an action game with pretensions to horror.

Anyway, horror games tend to not be my thing, but I did enjoy the first (definitely not the second, though) F.E.A.R. Good enemy A.I + superior mindfuckery = one intense experience.

Doom 3 was pretty scary.

it had A BUNCH of oh sh*t moments

and Resident Evil 4 was also scary be cause you don't got a partner like resident evil 5 which kinda gives away the suspense.

Fear 2.
Are you kidding? FEAR 2 was nowhere near as subtle or scary as the original. The original used a scary atmosphere to put you on edge, then used a slight scare to push you over. FEAR 2 just had monsters jumping out at you. Scary in its own right, maybe, but not FEAR worthy. Also, it was ruined by the fact that you could actually kill the ghosts.

I don't think Dead Space and Resi 5 are scary games.

As others have mentioned, if you haven't already, play the Project Zero series (PS2) (a.k.a. Fatal Frame) - it's turnoff scary.
For a more recent game - Siren:Blood Curse (PS3) or it's predecessors the Forbidden Siren series (PS2).
Also Silent Hill (PS1) and Silent HIll 2(PS2) are both classic scary.

All these games are listed here because I think their reason to be scary are the game mechanics used.
Project Zero [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_Frame] has a camera as a weapon.
Siren [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren_Blood_Curse] has you looking through the eyes of the enemies.
Silent Hill [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill] has the blinding fog and radio which emits sound when an enemy approaches.

If you want scary games these all scared me, not made me jump, scared me.

Yeah, RE5 didn't scare me at all. Even the massive acupuncture guy :/
I think they focus too much on pretty graphics and not on the story. They must spend all their time creating the game with the actors and mocaps, then say, "shit! we need a storyline!"
Scary games went out the window with bad graphics, if you ask me.

You've probably gotten used to survival horror games.

Also, western survival horror isn't particularly scary as it's based on jump-out-when-you-weren't-expecting-it type of horror. Japanese survival horror builds up a disturbing atmosphere that ****s with your head

maybe you shouldn't focus on main stream titles and try and find a few on the internet, like try newgrounds or just type in horror game in google

i found this one and it's a little scary (so long as you don't look away)

tbh... i think the problem is how they just throw enemies at you...

last i checked... exploiting really bad AI flaws, flailing your automatic rocket shotgun sniper... and being able to kill absolutely everything not just easily, but in any way you choose aswell...

theres just too many easy enemies... RESI5 for example... shoot zombie in leg, punch zombie, repeat... and theres not much else to it...

and FEAR aswell... all the psychological flashy BS effects and stuff... sandwiched inside constant piss-easy soldier attacks... and iff thats not easy enough... slowmoslowmoslowmo...

in short... theres too many enemies, all of which are too easy to kill or even manipulate... you have too much control i guess...

I have never found games or horror films scary. The problem with this is that in games, the worst thing that could happen to you is going back to the last checkpoint. The closest game to being scary I've ever played was Bioshock, on medium, with vita-chambers turned off. It took me a while to finish that, although right at the end it was easy.

Because most 'scary' games these days just rely on things jumping out and gore which really isn't all that scary and have abandoned the true art of mystery and tension.
This. The art was lost long ago.
