Dead Space had to many expected horros! like the giant arm that came and grabbed you...you could tell this would happen when you hadn't been attacked in 5 minutes

Fatal Frame was the last game that could scare me. Condemned had its moments, but it creeped me out more than it did scare.

Hello everyone.i dont know about you guys but one of the best games for the job here is alien vs predator the first one. When i played it with a pair of good headphones and at night i would be scared shitless:)but only when you play as the marine.i mean the atmosphere of you alone with a gun sure but only a flashlight to see (which you had to recharge so you spent some time in total darkness)it was very fun.

Penumbra Black Plague I've heard is pretty scary.

Also alot of puzzle solving.

Havn't heard of any review on it though so I couldn't tell you more.

Edit. Just read some reviews and mostly good things so try it, if you want a scary game.

Call of Cthulhu that's one scary game.
It's so freakishly brilliant and based on one of the true horror stories.
The game might not be graphical bliss bit it makes up for incredible tension.

Condemned 1 is quite a thrill...But the sequel is not scary.
Locker scene! ARGH!

I thought Condemned 2 was prety scary upuntil the halfway point when it just became JRPG levels of ridiculous.

If you have a gamecube, eternal darkness has a great story and fantastic gameplay. Its sanity effects are quite unique aswell but its really rare nowadays but you wont regret buying it if you find a copy.

That's because you werent really trying any scary games, at all! :D they're both fun, but I felt like I was lied to after expecting so much from Dead Space, and the only scarything about RE5 is getting chaced around by a one-hit-kill chainsaw guy
aaaaaaaanyway, Condemned 2 is a game where I got scared during the gameplay, while it still has very fun combat, even though you kind of have to be in the mood for scares. Also, Silent Hill games have a scary after taste

Play Portal. I was fucking jumpy as hell towards the end. Every time someone came in the room it scared the shit out of me. That game isn't meant to be scary in the sense of blood and gore, but it definitely works on the psychological front.

Well, since no one's brought it up yet, I'll mention Clock Tower.
I thought Clock Tower for the PS1 was pretty creepy, but more at the first main Act, in the college. The place was so huge and quiet, not to mention all exits were locked and there was the serial killer looking for you.

Plus, discovering people's bodies while you're hiding from Scissorman is pretty messed up.
Oh, and lets not forget the times where you hide somewhere, but he finds you...

Ugh, and the title screen music gives me chills...
I've never played the 3rd one though, and am still searching for the first one on the SNES.

I smell a wiki article...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock_Tower_(PlayStation)

Oh, and that one part in Condemned 2...two words: Grizzly Bear.

The Suffering for the old XBox and PS2 is the scariest game I've ever played. It's the only game I've ever played where I couldn't sleep that night after playing it. I never played the sequel though.

Have you played bioshock yet?
I dont even think it was even ment to be a scary game, yet i found myself not wanting to leave a particular room because im low on.... EVERYTHING. theres not monsters or anything, just assholes with guns and knives. yet the horror of it always seems to get me.

Most of the really scary games are usually ones that are not too popular or well received. Games that really gave me the willies were(are) games like "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth"
or the little known "Dark Eye" which is based on the tales of Edgar Allen Poe through the eyes of both the victim and the murderer, no game has ever scared me so much as the dark eye.

Other noteworthy mentions are Comdemned: Criminal Origins (PC)
I'd say Condemned. You're actually vulnerable... it's quite easy to die, and random homeless poeople all want you dead. Why? Because it's scary! That's why!

(I reccomend NOT FEAR, considering you can just slow down time and kick everything in the face to win the game).

I agree with Biek. Games like Silent Hill and Project Zero, both considered by many as the scariest in survival horror genre (correct me, if I´m wrong), have become old and too familiar. Horror elements used in those two work most effectively when experienced for the first time, but after that they become, well, familiar. Game developers should come up with new ways of inducing fright, if they want to keep the genre fresh.

I was just thinking, is there any game that uses hallucinations, insomnia, madness etc. as a core part of both narration and mechanics. If you´re acquinted with table-top RPGs, something like Don´t Rest Your Head or Unknown Armies could make quite an interesting video game.
There is, you should give Eternal Darkness: Sanity's requiem a go. This game messes with your head by making it look like the volume of your tv is going down or theres a fly on your monitor and stuff.
I must get this game. That sounds so awesome.

The only scary game I ever played was the very first Resident Evil back 10 years ago when I was but a humble pubescent. And even then, the only scares for me were the very first zombie and - altogether now - the dogs jumping through the window. Hardly genuine scares at all.

The problem is familiarity - it's all blood, gore and jump scares. We all grew out of them since Michael Myers was slashing babysitters in the 80s. Horror needs to be psychological before it can scare effectively.

I personally wouldn't recommed Sanity for the Gamecube - not scary, and the "Freak Out" moments are completely nullified by a sodding counter THAT TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHEN THEY'RE GOING TO HAPPEN. Futile.

I started a thread on this about 2 weeks ago, by the way :D

I agree that most games these days that are supposed to be scary but just aren't. It can be quite droll at times. However, games that I would recommend if you want a scare would be Scratches, the Silent Hill games, Condemned 1 (not Condemned 2 because they took alot of the thrill and suspense away plus it gets awkwardly weird at the end.). I'm trying out a game called Penumbra right now. It's supposed to be really scary but so far not much, however I haven't really gotten all that far in it.

I'd say it's a combination of things.

A) Yes, you've probably become desensitized to most things horror-related these days.

B) In most games you're given guns or some other way to directly defend yourself. Games would be so much more terrifying if you were actually in the shoes of someone trapped inside of a situation where they don't know where to go, and have no means of getting themselves there. I hesitate to say "You have to stealth around everywhere", but when it comes to -survival- horror, it seems most logical. Many survival horror games that come out make it so that the protagonist is (for starters, not afraid) fully capable of defending himself rather masterfully with whatever he has around him.
