Unfortunately, the female figure consists of a lot of curves that just can't be well-captured using rough estimates like pixels and big triangles. I'm sure the old Tomb Raider was accepted because it was all that was there; today, though, not many could easily look back on there.

OP, I wouldn't exactly equate Bayonetta with Michaelangelo. Paintings that very closely resemble the real thing can certainly be erotic, but I wouldn't place getting off on the strippers in GTA very far from getting off on "disney nude" google searches.Dejawesp said:

I think the problem is the same as the Escapist addressed recently when discussing EA's patronizing of their customers. Bayonetta was so sexed up, especially the prerelease marketing blitz, that I had a bias against the game until I read positive reviews from critics I respect. Games are not yet to the point where they can serve as pornography to grown men who aren't turned on by cartoons. And so, just like movies, they shouldn't try to serve the same purpose. Making a character sleek and sexy, or flirty, is one thing. Trying to make her masturbation material is insulting to those of us who want our pornography and our legitimate art separate.
I think this explains my reasoning on this topic. I don't find fake people attractive in real life nor in an artificial form. If a girl is being slutty and looks fake in real life, people generally dismiss her, but if a video game character is being slutty and looks fake [too much make up and overly flirty personality], people ogle over her and claim, "ZOMFG SHES SO HAWT HOW CAN U NOT LEIK HER?" It is social double standard that exists for the purposes of artificial arousal and escapism.Dreiko said:

Now, that's half... The other half, it's like this... I think you gotta be an artist to find a cartoon character attractive, (I'm not saying a good artist, just, you gotta have an artist mentality), because then you can look at a cartoon, and instead of seeing it for what it is literally, instead of seeing it as lines and inks, you gotta see it for the intepretation of the person that the artist was trying to depict.
I don't really care though, I'll be the first to admit that Marge Simpson and Lois Griffin are hot.

A game character never pretends to not be there just for a cheap titillation, I mean, look at that DoA volleyball game...that game could have been sold with lotion and a wool sock and it wouldn't seem odd.
We all like some titillation, it's the hypocrisy we don't like...so...if DoA volleyball was the same game but it had a war story in there too, and the beach segments were the vacation part after the war parts, that would be the same thing, it doesn't do that though, it knows was it is and it doesn't lie to us about it, making it leagues beyond fake humans pretending to be authentic.
I have no problems admitting that fictional characters can be attractive, I mean a lot of them are designed with that in mind anyway, so mission accomplished.

It's a question of animation more than pixel count I think.

Think of this way. The same pixels that create a picture of Scarlet Johansson can be re-arranged to create Samus Aran. The difference is purely academic.
