Why Cat girls?

Cats are often regarded as sassy and alluring; they're sleek and mysterious; they're small, delicate, and cute. Catgirls are also, without the "cat" part, usually skinny, large-breasted, scantily clad women. They're sexy in a very trite, shallow way.

Basically, you could construct a female stereotype out of strategically picked cat traits (we conveniently forget "sleeping all the time" and "clawing your eyes out if you tick them off"), and the female body used in the catgirl image is already a Barbie-esque parody of a real girl. Hence why many guys fall all over them.

Just cause, they look hot. I mean, when you think cat, you think sleek, elegant, almost royalty, something that if i used to define a car, car nuts would say is "sexy".

Then... you have anime. Its really a perfect fusion. Plus, I'm pretty sure the Neko (yes, they're called nekos, and yes, i know that off the top of my head), is something that is already imbedded into the Japanese culture like religion or something.

I don't understand how you decide what cat features an anime character is allowed to have, and what features must remain human.

I find the whole fetish strange.

A catgirl usually only has ears and a tail, or sometimes paws. Catgirls are plausible as a costume accessory (though not all are played that way).

Anything more than that, such as being covered in fur, and you're not usually really talking about a catgirl anymore, but rather an anthropomorphic cat. (Aka. A furry if you want to be insulting.)
