Been knocking about on TF2 tonight, and thinking a lot about opinions on multiplayer games. Using the cheap "yahtzee would agree" tactic inspired me to do this. (apologies for typos/grammar/fat fingers, I am REALLY drunk right now).

Caveats:

I am a gamer of a certain age (ie OLD)

I still like games.

I don't want the latest and greatest multiplayer experience. If I want MMO, I play MMO. I like a story. The story can be bad(loved F.E.A.R. and the sequel).

Lastly, co-op is only good as a last resort. None of my mates will play with me. (they all use cheat codes, I play hardcore...and cry)

I can't be the only one. AAA games are becoming the domain of spoilt kids who have the bandwidth.

Games that made me feel this way? Sup Com 2, DoW2, Sanctum.

Apologies if this is rehash of an old post.

That is your opinion and you're welcome to it. I for one lament the lack of co-op in many games and I am not alone either.

Or more succinctly, "that's just your onion."

Meh, unless a game is designed in a way that works really well with both co-op and single player, I think that co-op and single player should be distinct from each other (single player mode and co-op mode on the same game should be designed seperately). I don't like games designed for co-op and then there's me playing single player and it kinda stinks, or games designed for single plaer with some stuffed in co-op that makes the game feel really odd.

The only problem with Co-op is there's not enough people to play it with :/

I'm a lonely guy in borderlands (more due to Gamespy than anything) and none of my friends own Supreme Commander 2.

Not a fan of co-op either. Times when I could play something with a friend are very rare.

The same with forced global statistics and so on.

I never have an issue playing co-op as I have a few friends who are always willing to hop on with me.

And, just as an aside, I'm an O.G. as well.

I think that Co-op can be really fun, provided you have people who will join in. Recently me and my friend scoured Steam looking for a few decent co-op games and we had a blast. :)

not a big Coop player myself either but TF2 is made so great i sometimes feel like it's actually a singleplayer with extremely intelligent bots (compared to the AI of course not always those people are the most intelligent on the planet) and keeping a bunch of other games around i've never completed of different genres just in case i get bored of what i got already (good lord longest post i've ever made here)

it really depends on how it is put together. if done right, it can be amazing. if done poorly, well you know it. i like co-op in games like l4d and diablo II, but there is human factor in it which can destroy it. grievers, teamkillers and more. that will always be a problem with co-op.

What?

I love Co-Op when it's on the same console, IE: Am able to play with my siblings or friends in the same room. I feel in some games it can add quite a bit too, allows for more cheap tactics, or as I prefer to call it, teamwork and is just much more fun period. In some games it's particularly awesome, such as Magicka. I mean having beaten the game singleplayer there were so many times I just ragequit, doing it two player was a breeze. A fun one wherein we'd screw each other over continuously and have some kickass spell combos.

so...why IS co-op bad?

OP seemed to mostly be a whine about a lack of friends to play with and some nonsense about kids with bandwidth?

if you don't want to or can't play co-op games that's fine, that doesn't make them bad.

I always find myself doing badly on co-op because of my internet connection, not my skill, HONEST!
You make some good points, but my mane problem with them is lack in class diversity and the fan base, every multiplayer game i have found to have at least one of these problems, COD have both.
Sadly multiplayer is a lucrative business and it's getting to the point were all, if not most games are expected too.

I like co-op. I actually prefer it vastly to competitive multiplayer. However I always have a steady group of friends online to play most games with.

Co op isn't bad, just how it's implemented. Co op should be optional, but not required and the existence of it shouldn't take away from your experience. It's one of the reasons I hated FEAR 3 so much. It had co op, but when playing single player it still did the whole points tallying thing that was meant to be a small competition between the co op players. The game was worse for the fact that they put co op in it.

I am not a big co-op player, as I have never been a big fan of it in general. I have always preferred the single player/story mode. When I do play co-op, it is usually local co-op when a couple of friends come over and we blow the dust off the N64 or the gamecube and indulge in some Resident Evil 4 mercenaries on the PS2/ Gamecube or Super Smash bros. even with my friends wii when we play Mario kart wii we nearly always play local co-op. I find it more fun than online, but that's just my opinion.

See my friends are generally decent a we play a lot of co op games together.....so...yeah I disagree. I much prefer playing with a friend than playing with strangers - and even better if that friend is in the same room! (Although split-screen can get a little annoying due to screen sizes)

If you fancy a "playthru 3 [http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=113923]" sometime, I'd be interested. I enjoyed the game but it's too easy. I found those saves but haven't tried it yet...if it gets around the difficulty problem I'd def be up for a go...haven't done 4th DLC yet either.

IF you have a friend who can play with you, co-op is good. Even as your opinion, I say your completely wrong on this. Forcing co-op is wrong. Having the option is good. Portal 2 shows this, the co-op was more fun than the SP.
