because they lied.
nobody gave a fuck about it.
my mum had friends over and that translated to 'talking about random crap with the TV on BBC 1.'

I don't know anyone that actually cared about it (i live in england), in fact i got so sick and tired of the adverts i havent turned my TV on since then, but saying that the same thing happens with all the "talent" shows where the people with no talent win (e.g. jedwerd *shudder*), they also get turned off too.

You were doing so well until that. It's pretty much just tradition, same reason we do everything else. But saying that they're worth nothing to society is a bit obtuse don't you think?

The only reason I think of for it being forced so much in Australia is to revive interest in the Royals... It was a fantastic opportunity for the Royalists to irritate the Republicans.

It's an English thing? Nah, I know English people who can't understand it either.

Actually, Jedward got knocked out in round 6. Thankfully.

I didn't really care ... like, at all. I was busy killing Reapers at the time and saving the council.

Why do people celebrate christmas? It's a tradition even if the original meaning has been lost.

dunno, man. its beyond me. and many of those people had no freaking clue who the bride and groom were before all the hype began. people (sheeple) just become invested in stupid shit all of a sudden if enough other people are as well

thats a different matter. christmas actually has a point. it brings people together, its usually a fun and joyous time, and presents are given and received. im an atheist and i still celebrate christmas. the royal wedding is an entirely different story. nobody gains anything from watching two people they dont know getting married. i was going to compare it to "reality" tv, but the royal wedding wasnt even entertaining to anyone. it was just a ridiculous news broadcast.

Edit: also, am i the only one that thinks airing the royal wedding all over the world was a mockery of the entire wedding process? i thought marriage was supposed to be two people joining together in matrimony, not publicity and commercialism. i dont understand :/

It's like asking why celebrity gossip gets peoples attention or why Jersey Shore is popular.

There is no good answer, only confusion.

i'm not great at understanding people, not at all, it took me the best part of 10 years to figure out why people watched football, but i was just thinking about the royal wedding and i've drawn up a blank, i mean why would anyone, much less hundreds of thousands of people give up their day off to watch two people, worth absolutely nothing to society, kiss on a balcony? i mean seriously, WHY?!

edit: for cryin' out loud people! can we maybe stop insulting my reaction times?! i just said i was just thinking about it, i didn't say i'd been planning this thread for the past 3 months!
I don't know whether or not your British, but if your not, here is the reason: Most British people care about their national history and respect their culture enough to give up 10 minutes of their day to witness a momentous moment in British history. Even those who didn't care much about the royals still took part because it was a celebration, where people could be happy and have a good time, while were in the middle of some dark times.

Also, really?
Someone who plays video games can't understand why people enjoy football. its one thing not to like it, but not to understand why its fun o_O

Honestly, why not celebrate. Celebrations are fun, even if some people have no fucking idea whats going on. The way I see it, if you want to call people sheep for wanting to join in the festivity's, then your probably a sad hat who would ruin it anyway and should stay inside.

I watched the wedding on TV (while doing other stuff, it was pretty loong). It was more curiosity to me since royal weddings are pretty rare and this is the first one in a while thats been popular. As for why it was popular? I suppose since it was the first ever marriage of royalty to 'a commoner' as they kept saying. The funny thing is, if Kate is common the rest of the country doesn't stand a chance.

It's the culture of celebrity, the same mentality that can be witnessed in many other examples (as are listed on this very thread). Our lives are dull and meaningless, hence we devote ourselves to a myriad of pursuits to distract us from that reality. One of the most popular is attempting to live vicariously via a more popular and/or successful individual, following their lives and knowing as much about them as possible to substitute actually being them. The Royals of many nations, including the Royal Wedding, is a manifestation of that culture.

There are a great chunk of people living in the UK that really couldn't give two craps about the royals at all.

I'm one of them.

Tax dodging pompous gits.

Because the English royal family is the most famous and important royal family to ever walk the face of the earth? And if I remember rightly, they have sovereign over 4 American states, Canada, Australia, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Iraq, South Africa... Pretty much 60% of the colonies we used to own. This may be irrelevant in the name of power, but that isn't the point... The point is that they influence.

And the fact that the royal wedding brought well over £3 billion worth of profit in merchandise and advertising before the wedding even began. So it was the biggest boost in our economy for a while.

And royalty is a symbol of national pride.

Just posting in this forum confirms you care, you opinion may not be positive, but it is an opinion all the same, if you don't care don't worry about it. I don't really care, but I see it brings joy to some people's live, just because I cant understand why myself it doesn't mean I should try and take it away from them, and tell them that the thing that brings them so much joy is ridiculous. I'm just sayin'

I'm guessing it's a combination of spectacle, an excuse to throw a party and good ol' vicarious living.

That's all I got.

I knew nobody who really cared about the Royal Wedding, I think people just watched it because it was the reason we all had a holiday that day and didn't know what else to do with the time.

Also.

She's actually technically a Duchess, not the Princess. Or so Wikipedia would have me believe.
