Well, i think it probably had something to do with the style of the simpsons at the time of his presidency from 2001-2009 the simpsons was a show that was based much more in reality and making comments on the average american family, during the years of the clinton administration the simpsons were based more in abstract making humorous references to popular culture constantly. So maybe he just got lucky? :p

Meanwhile Clinton has been featured to an almost embarrassing degree. Sometimes he just pops out of nowhere to make a comment about himself like "I was a pretty bad president" and "I have had sex with pigs"

Is Groenings personal politics bleeding through his work or did Bush never do anything that offered a comedic opening for a sketch or joke?
Kids thinking that they know anything about the Simpsons.

Some history for you kiddie. The heyday for the Simpsons was in the reign of George H Bush, Bush 1, NOT Dubya (Bush 2). And they were hated so stridently by not only President Bush, but his wife Barbara Bush, that Barbara Bush campaigned directly against the Simpons for years trying to get it taken off the air.

Yes. You read that correctly. The first lady trying for years to get a show taken off the air. NONE of the shows that criticised the 2nd Bush's presidency came anywhere CLOSE to that.

And tell me this. Please. Answer me this. How did you MISS THE EPISODE THAT HAS (recently retired) PRESIDENT GEORGE H BUSH AS THE MAIN GUEST STAR/VILLAIN!!!

IT'S ONE OF THE MOST WELL KNOWN SIMPSONS EPISODES OF THE FIRST SIX SEASONS, HOW COULD YOU MAKE THIS TOPIC AND NOT REFER TO IT EVEN ONCE. THE EPISODE WITH PRESIDENT BUSH IN IT.

Ok, calmed down a bit, I'll try to type normally again. I'm talking about the episode where Homer starts a feud with President Bush (after Bush moves in across the street in order to retire and write his memoirs). The two of them get increasingly fed up with each other until they end up getting in an extended fist fight and Bush Snr has to move out. How could you not refer to that?

What you're forgetting is that the ENTIRE FIRST FIVE SEASONS of the Simpsons was basically an anti-Bush comment. They didn't NEED to refer to them directly, because the whole concept of the show (highly original at that point in time) was anti-republican - the idea of having a start who is a lazy, alcoholic slob was a major controversy among conservatives who called for it to be taken off the air because they couldn't handle having an 'everyman' being heroised.

I remember watching an interview with Groenig around 6 seasons in, where he's being asked about Barbara Bush's campaign against them. He said that apparently he and one of the writers actually bumped into Barbara Bush at an event one time, and he smiled and waived to Ms Bush assuming that she was only pretending to hate them for the sake of playing politics. Nope, apparently she really was offended by the whole concept of the show and made her views rather clear:).

Next time you ask 'why hasn't x show made any jokes about President Bush?' pick a show that WASN'T upsetting Bush presidents back when YOUR president Bush was still a drunken fratboy.
Why are you getting so upset over this? :p he meant Bush junior not senior, And he obviously remembers the episode where bush movies across the street. That episode is a classic :D

President who? Why not join us in the present mate?
I didn't have a lot of thread name space so I said "president bush" so everyone would get who I meant

Dude, they did it constantly, did you have your eyes closed and your ears shut?
Really? Constantly? Okay lay some constant examples on me. How about 8-10 for starters and we can work from there.

I think the people saying that Simpson is on fox has a good point though. That would very well be the reason.

I'm from Europe so I have no insight into what shows on what and what channel supports what party. All I know is we have simpsons about 3-4 times a day here so I have seen every episode there is several times over and something that is universal is that they never make any jokes about Bush. The closest they ever get is "The government knows best act" and at the end of the navy recruitment episode where Homer says "Anything's possible with Commander Cuckoo-Bananas in charge"
you may have answered your question partially with that Europe part. If you watch translated versions you will miss a lot of the Jokes. Especially the german translators are pretty bad or just make up new stuff often.
They don't dub the Simpsons here. They just use subtitles, and before you mention poorly translated subtitles, you will have to trust me when I say that I don't need to read them.

That doesn't stop Family Guy or American Dad.
Ok.

I maintain that "Bush is stupid" jokes are very unsophisticated, and beneath what I would expect from the Simpsons. Which I think has better writers and higher standards than McFarlene's various creations.

They're not without their merits(I watch 'em) but the Simpsons is(and always has been)classier.

Hypothetically if they didn't make any, i'd say it's because everyone else already used them all.

Because the people who wrote/write The Simpsons are actually very smart, even if it doesn't show during the show (seriously some of them went to Harvard and others like David Cohen are great with mathematics) My point is that they could probably see how everyone was making fun of George Bush back then, and it was just bad and redundant to make George Bush joke because it is so easy.

And if you haven't noticed, when a television show takes a strict political stance, and makes fun of those in the opposing parties they often get verbally lynched and bullied. Think about Family Guy, at every step of the way there was Fox News, Sarah Palin and other Republican politicians to slander and curse at them. Since I wasn't technically alive 22 years ago when The Simpsons began, I can only assume that there were groups or television shows that would take a political side and be slandered because of it.

One digression, has anyone noticed that often when someone makes a completely superfluous joke about the republican party and someone says something innocent along the lines of "Thats not necessarily true." They are immediately demonized?

Boom answer. I couldn't find a clip but here's the definition from urban dictionary:

Homer Simpson's nickname for *, AWOL George, Shrub, Miserable Failure, Cimpy McCokespoon, Dumbya, etc. (George W Bush)
Marge: Bart, I love you, but sometimes I don?t love your choices. (sigh) Now we have to find another school for you.

Homer: Yeah, and if you get kicked out of that one you?re going straight in the army where you?ll be sent straight to America?s latest military quagmire. Where will it be? North Korea? Iran? Anything?s possible with Commander Cuckoo-Bananas in charge.

Not exactly what you had in mind but lampooning the single most controversial aspect of the entire Bush presidency- the 2000 election itself. Quoted from Ned Flanders in an earlier episode, word for word: 'Well, I haven't felt this good since we stole the 2000 election.'

They did, the end of the 90's episode it was implied when the characters were saying that "there will never be a worse president than Clinton", it was a hindsight joke.

Oh they did There was the episode where he moved in across the street from them, it wasn't really making a joke about him as it was portraying him as a grumpy old man (although it might have been Bush Snr.)

Yes that was his father. The wife in the Episode is Barbara Bush who was Bush Jr's mother while his wife is named Laura.

Okay, see the problem here is that Bill Clinton's presidency was in an era where you could make fun of politicians without being political. We've since become so divided and divisive as a country that anything that brings up things that are even peripherally related to politics are basically guaranteed to piss off half the country. It's just not worth it anymore.

Well... as has been pointed out they can and do get away with it as long as they're just a little subtle. The outrage addicts aren't exactly the brightest people after all. Mostly it's impossible to discuss anything anymore though.

na, i think the clinton jokes were just done out of fun humor. its not till the recent couple seasons that his politics have started bleeding in. you know, the painfully awful last couple of seasons
