Because that is the western(nized) way of game devolution I mean development.
I look at Final Fantasy 13 and I can't help but wonder why you think this is a west only thing.

I mean when did the west ever turn its licenses into pachinko machines?

Annyyywaayyy, I once watched 4 hours of Mafia 1 and it looked like someone took the GTA 4 approach of "Hey *****, drive over there and do some shit for me" and made it into a game.

Mafia 2 looked better, but then I didn't watch a lot of it.

I watched what I assume is the video that led to the OP making this thread, as the comments there mirror his reaction (I'll link it down below). Its 12 minutes, and I'd better get a cookie for that, because I HATE IGN commentaries.

My impressions:

The Pros - It looks like a fun third person shooter. I like third person shooters, though I have to agree with people when they say that it looks a lot like the more recent Splinter Cell games. You have a lot of different executions, I think there are several unique ones for each gun. And it's a nice little touch that you are ambidextrous.

As an open world game, it looks gorgeous and is packed with people. New Jersey looks like a very interesting place to be. It seems to reward exploration. The driving also seems nice (they have a rear-view mirror! I don't know why I was so entertained by that), but TBH I never cared about things like that. There's this cool minigame where you drive like a crazy man in order to scare the shit out of the target. That's right up my alley, I hate having to drive all proper like.

The Cons - It's definitely not a Mafia game that Mafia fans want, but is it a con? More on that later.

Anyway, I couldn't really find any cons, at least from the gameplay. I guess you could claim that is generic, and I wouldn't blame you. You could also say it's not very realistic, and from what admittedly little I know of the Mafia series, I think some fans would have a problem with this. The game goes out of it's way to make cars explode, and it kind of rubs me the wrong way. There was this one part where 4 guys in a car were shooting you with Tommy guns, and one shot from your pistol to their wheel made them do a 360 flip in the air and explode for no particular reason. The same goes for a lot of the hand to hand takedowns. They seem overly violent and not at all stealthy. I assume its from this that many people are claiming that it copies GTA. Is it a legitimate claim? Depends on you.

The Thing I Would Kinda Prefer Not to Talk About - So. This game has a mixed race character.

Sigh.

This is one of the bigger complaints I have seen. Not that the dude is black, but more of that he isn't Italian. The game is called Mafia, the series has always been a member of the Mafia, but in this game your job is to... overthrow the Mafia?

I thought it was a cool move to have a mission in Mafia 2 where you kill the protagonist of the earlier game, but isn't this taking it too far? There is no law that says that the game has to be similar to the last ones, but I am just saying that I can understand why a lot of Mafia fans are upset. They wanted a Godfather experience, instead you get the, uh, I dunno, whatever the organization you lead is (Is the "black mob" a thing? I never heard of them).

The character's race could definitely lead to some good storytelling, and the devs themselves claim they will tackle racial issues. I hope they don't do it too heavy handed.

All in all, while I disagree with the notion that this will be a bad game, I can totally understand why fans are upset.

I can understand that objection; I don't personally mind at all, but I get it. It's the notion of the "exotic" experience, the archetype that goes with certain genres. In a spaghetti western, you need at least one Mexican and/or "Indian". In a period piece, you need your English accents. In a mafia thing, you need your Italians.

I tried Mafia 1 a few years ago on the PC. The driving mechanics and the way the cars handled were so archaic that I couldn't even enjoy the game. To me, it hasn't aged well at all. There are tons and tons of old games that I enjoy playing, Baldurs Gate on the PC, Icewind Dale etc, but I honestly think that Mafia 1 is nigh unplayable just because of how realistic those old cars handled.
I ended up using a training half-way through the game to deal with the gunplay. I would suggest doing the same, if you manage to circumvent the archaic design, it's a very absorbing and rewarding experience.

"Mafia II" was an alright game let down by terrible pacing and stiff gameplay. This gameplay seems to be much smoother and more responsive. Yeah it's taking a stylish approach rather than a realistic one - but I don't see what made the previous games so realistic so oh well. I just hope they don't force you to go back to sleep at the end of the each mission and drive back to base every damn time.

Eh, never trust a trailer. From what I understand, they messed with the car physics and upped the explodability just for these promotions. One thing I loved about the first mafia game is that a car can become utterly riddled with bullets and still drive as long as the engine/wheels are still attached - hopefully we'll still see the same?

My only other cause for concern is that it is now set in an actual place, as opposed to a fictional city counterpart. That's hopefully a minor detail, but it seems like a weird writing decision to break the trend, and I'm worried about what else they might consider changing.

There was a lot of flaws to Mafia 2, storywise and gameplaywise, and my only hope is that we see a bit more reversion back to the first game. I don't mind cover mechanics or re-charging health, but I did mind how the gun variety seemed to decrease, and a lot of fun mechanics (like driveby shooting) had been pulled out for lack of time. I liked how Mafia 2 implied a bigger crime syndicate, but I disliked how forgettable a lot of the actual characters were by comparison.

Oh man, that's terrible.

Someone on a forum told me Mafia 3 was going to be one of the best games of the year.
See, this is why you don't buy into hype. I imagine Doom and Quantum Break aren't going to be all that grand either.

I've always wondered if the people who loved the first Mafia were people who haven't watched a lot of movies. Because sure, Mafia did a lot of things right in the story and atmosphere department, but when you just rip off The Godfather and Goodfellas scene for scene that's hardly a masterpiece of creativity. Gameplay was a total wreck though. It was tolerated back in its day because games tended to be jankier, but it doesn't hold up.

Mafia II was a bit more robust in gameplay, though it did so by being as generic in its driving and shooting mechanics as possible. The story wasn't very compelling either, even if it may have been slightly more original. So as far as I can tell, there isn't much of a series to ruin here.
