Why discussing the good and bad of piracy is inherantly pointless.

I've seen thread after thread about piracy on this forum. Both sides have a point. Some people like pirating other people don't. There's just one thing. You can't stop them. Nobody can. No matter how much protection they put into their games, no matter how much they sue people, nobody can stop them. That's why discussing the goods or the bads of piracy is essentially pointless. Whether you like it or not, whether companies like it or not, nobody, absolutely no one, will ever stop them. Ever. So, can we please stop discussing these things already? Yeah, DRM is crap, I get it. But the fact is that they're practically omnipotent, and nobody will ever stop them.

The thing is, if we stop complaining about piracy, that's one less thing we get to complain about! We need things to complain about!

...No we probably won't stop them. Unless you're like Order of War.

Order of War won against piracy for a while. They released the game broken as hell and crashes at the end of every mission.

...And then released the patch, on release day, through steam. >> That's pretty win.

Discussing the pro's and con's of war is "inherently pointless" as it doesn't matter what we say, there will still be wars as long as there are those who want to wage war and have the power to do so.

People are still going to discuss the morality of and what causes people to pirate things. Thats why it's called a discussion. your supposed to discuss.

My point is, this could be said about anything that has 2 sides to it.

OT: Through all of this arguing, has anyone ever reconsidered their position on whether piracy is right or wrong? I doubt anyone has.

Pirates don't "have a point" besides liking free stuff they should be paying for - whether they admit that or not is irrelevant.

Anyway, most of the discussions relate to the implementation of DRM and the price of games. And just because piracy can't be fully eliminated doesn't mean we can't discuss the ways in which to reduce it.

You know I was thinking about Piracy today. All this recent uproar about piracy is getting all worked up about nothing.

If history shows us trends when new technology comes out yes it comes out cracked and susceptible to theft, but as time goes on that dwindles down to insignificant levels.

Just look at for example the push for cable boxes in the 1980s in order to expand the level of channels available to people. When they first came out getting illegal hotboxes was fairly rampant. Nowadays you simply dont see many working hotboxes out there, and the ones that you do only stay working for a very short amount of time until they need to be reflashed and thus making it not worth all the effort.

eventually software will normalize, sure it might take another 10-20 years but its fairly safe to say with the game industry being as insanely profitable as it has been with no signs of slowing down, that it can easily weather the storm of piracy until copy protection becomes standard enough to prevent such things from occurring in mass.
