Perhaps I can enlighten you on my opinion.Phoenix_XIII said:Although I did state that people said that, that's what I've heard. Minutes to Midnight, Thousand Suns, all of it. I like it. I listen to their new stuff. While I'm editing videos I'll listen to New Divide and Waiting For the End. But a lot of people complain that they've gotten whiny and crap like that. I like it. Bands evolve. That's what life is like. You gotta adapt or die.
My fellow Excapists, what do you think about their newer music?
And to answer your question if I do or not: I don't. It's whiny and crap.
And I can agree that it's a bit whiny, but they've always been a bit whiny. When I first heard Waiting For The End (a dark winter morning before heading off to school) I was confused as hell. I didn't think it was them. But it was them. And though it sounded different, it wasn't the different that My Chemical Romance became. Linkin Park are still Linkin Park. My Chemical Romance became an entirely different band.
Hybrid Theory and Meteora were angst-driven and aspiring to ape the shadow left by Papa Roach after Infest. And I loved them for it. I've never been a huge fan of most rap artists, arguably the only one I listen to is Eminem and even he has many songs I don't like. But when rap is combined well with another genre that I like, it becomes something that I enjoy listening to - In this specific case, "Rap-metal". It is a similar reason to why I enjoy Lupe Fiasco or Hollywood Undead.
I understand the "They evolved and found their own sound" argument, I do. One could argue that it was even a logical evolution after listening to songs like "My December" or ..."Easier To Run", which for the record I love. I won't go so far as to say I hate their "new stuff" but in my own opinion they fell into the same pitfall that Papa Roach did when they were trying to dig their way out of the "Nu Metal" hole they had been pushed in to.
It is very difficult to explain without a clashing of opinion unless you can see the other person's view without getting offended. To me, Hybrid Theory and Meteora were made for the express purpose of catering to angsty teenagers, and being one when I first listened to them, it was exactly the type of music I wanted. Minutes to Midnight was a radical departure from their previous releases (or at least what was played on commercial radio was), so much so that I just could never enjoy the actual music. I believe that I would not have had an issue had they not released it as Linkin Park, but what would the point in that be?
To boil it down into a pithy statement: I liked them for being "Rap-Metal".
[sub]On the other hand, I have not given their new albums much of a chance since I massively expanded my music library about a year ago and if I were to actually devote some time to listening to Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns, I would probably like them. After all, how many people can say that in half an hour they listened to Michael Jackson, Polkadot Cadaver, Suicide Silence, Deftones, The Acacia Strain, Blink-182, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky?[/sub]
