Why do American producers have to milk everything?

I think the TV series I liked the most for the longest was Highlander. They were having good episodes through Season Five, and that's really impressive. Not only that, they didn't have a very large budget or a lot of great special effects.

I profoundly agree. Even though the overall plot was usually the same (two immortals battling eachother), there were enough different storylines from different locations and different time periods that one could not get hooked in. Almost every villian had a special calling card specific to them (the episodes with normal humans trying to screw everything up were ingenious).

That is one of the few series that I can say literally worked itself back from almost the point of nothingness after Highlander 2.

On side notes, I have enjoyed Saw's sequels (and the subsequent developmental storylines), better than the original. The many games that are being played subsequently only pay greater tribute to Jigsaw's genius. I hope they have an actual conclusion for the series;
that would eliminate many fears the fans have of the series becoming stagnant.

As far as television goes, most staleness and milking comes from starting off a TV series, finding out it's actually a hit, then simply pouring out season after season until the series loses popularity. Then it is cancelled. Usually producers, writers, and directors launch pilot programs without an actual storyline planned out. This (and personnel changes due to budget cuts or buyouts) have a tendency to create errors in continuity in a series, which have a tendency to alienate viewers.

"La Femme Nikita" (USA, Peta Wilson as female lead)

American? umm.... lets see, media in general being milked... Final Fantasy, Dragonball (Z/GT), Megaman ( a total of about 30 games including spinoffs) damn, most anime serieses last way too long. In conclusion, why do producers, not just American, milk things. and the answer as all have put it, money. When a show catches serious fans, there is no reason to kill the chicken who lays the golden eggs. If enough people don't like the series in question enough to keep watching, it dies. Dont blame the producers, blame the consumers.
