Why do current RPGs not have scythes?

Have you ever tried animating a scythe-wielder realistically?

I'm not saying it's impossible to use one as some here - anything can be a weapon, especially anything pointy and especially if you're strong. Efficiency is another question entirely, but scythes have been used in combat in history, albeit largely by those without other options. But high quality 3D plunges awkward weapons straight into immersion breaking territory without some bloody good animation work.

'Least that's what I think.
Perhaps in some cases, but it looks like Visceral Games did just fine in Dante's Inferno. Animation is the easy part because it just has to be believable. You just need a fluid swing and nice knock-back on the victim. Now, if you're trying to animate directly from video reference of someone trying to fight with a scythe? Yeah, that would look awkward, but that's why animators are allowed to take artistic liberties. Because total realism usually sucks.

actually boomerangs are hunting tools... but ill let that pass.. and honestly final fantasy is not the best i use this as a weapon excuse...

but scythes where not designed to be weapons, and honestly i like realism with my rpgs.. i mean id rather have a simple spear then any of those fancy ones above
actually boomerangs are hunting tools
Yeah, I was hoping nobody would realize that >_>
That being said, they were only used to hunt small animals, and they had practically no potential in war.

and honestly final fantasy is not the best i use this as a weapon excuse...
So I can't use the most successful RPG franchise as an example for other RPGs? Darn.

and honestly i like realism with my rpgs
So, you've never used a phoenix down, have you? Do you also take your turn stabbing people so they can take their turn stabbing you?

i mean id rather have a simple spear then any of those fancy ones above
You're quite the boring person, aren't you? That being said, normal weapons usually have better stats when you have the choice between the two.

sadly i am quite boring... and well honestly im not a big inal fantasy fan.. i gave up on them round 10... so uh yeah....

Please just let this thread die. Then Death can take it because he can actually appreciate scythes.
By bumping this thread you revived it.

The real question is why do RPGs neglect polearms and axes? Historically they were the most commonly used melee weapons. Swords were the equivalent of an officers pistol.
You mean like death is an idiot? And like how nunchaks are farming tools and only an idiot would use them?
Death doesn't fight, he harvests. There is a reason nunchucks weren't used on the battlefield, and that's because they're thoroughly useless.
Man, you're the stereotypical nerd who's a killjoy by correcting people about the historical accuracy of certain weapons in certain periods. Nothing stops nunchaks from being cool in Ninja Gaiden.

Play Star Ocean. That is all.
I think he would what to play games that don't suck
It was bad?
no i enjoyed the star ocean games. read reviews, im not saying they are all amazing! lol
yeah ill say the game play was fun and good but the story, setting, (not the look just the feel), characters (all but 2), and voice acting suck. its that type of game that when you watch the cut scenes (much more with other people in the room) You get embarrassed, blush and leave the room while its playing.

And in an RPG that just horrible thing to do so taking it as an RPG its just bad. But if your taking it for just the game play... its passable but there are so many better RPGS.

I don't care if scythes aren't realistically used as weapons they are still FUCKING AWESOME and need to be used more in videogames. I would like to see an RPG with a scythe wielder (I need another one after Arumat in Star Ocean)

Also, the japanese naginata was used in many ways as a scythe more than a simple polearm/spear weapon, and that weapons wasn't an improvised weapon at all.

So saying that "only an idiot would fight with a scythe" wouldn't be very historically considerate on your part.

Scythe's are a tool for farming, not for fighting. Peasants used to use them for self-defense, but most military's never employed them as they're simply too cumbersome.
Many weapons started as tools, Pitchforks for example.

People saying "These weapons are not realistic" should all be forced to look at some classic RPGs such as Shadow Hearts and even Persona. Characters used giant fishes, Excalibur still in the rock, coins and street signs.

I have a gunblade ...
It lacks a trigger and the blade is attached to the bolt, which prevents the pistol from even chambering a round, let alone firing it. This a sword with a very pointless novelty grip that looks like a luger.
Actually, it's a Nambu, used by the Japanese in WWII. Real gun, real sword, really desperate.

You make me laugh.

OT: How is it unrealistic. Ok you are in a barn. an army is approaching. the nearest things to you are a scythe and a 2 by 4. What would you go for?

There's plenty of games that use kamas; which are like sickles, so 1h scythes?

Also I recall dual wielding 2h scythes in Neverwinter Nights 2. Not because it was particularly effective, but solely for the awesomeness of it.

Why would anyone think a scythe would be a good weapon? The Grim Reaper only uses one because of the symbolism (he reaps souls the same way people reap corn).

Cuz ppl arent playing games for realism. If I can use H2H vs a giant lava monster and noone gives it a second glance, the I can fight with a comically over sized scythe for sex appeal, and GP.

I'm surprised the Scythe is getting so much hate. What's the big deal?

Team Fortress's 2 Soldier has a shovel.

Jackie Chan uses a ladder.

Ness uses a Yo-Yo.

All is good..

Someone suggests a Scythe to make a come back and some people lose their shit?
