Why do first-wave next-gen games always suck?

Yeah, I knew you could do that, it didn't make it any more fun. It was still the same level over and over again, the only thing that changed was how you got the star.
...and where the star was. And what routes/obstacles were available in getting to the star. And other variable elements such as water levels, powerups unlocked, clockwork speed, size of openings and Mario himself, in some cases what enemies would be found in the level, what allies and neutrals, cannons available... the list goes on.
