Why Do Gamers Insist On Getting Games On Midnight?

1.Usually up anyways
2.A lot less traffic late at night than middle of the day
3.Everyone knows what they want "BEFORE" they even walk in the door so no pesky walk-ins asking the cashier "what's this" and "how's that work?"
4.If it's for one to three games(best odds if you want over 50% of them) that night you can strike up a conversation with a random stranger and/or maybe find a fellow player to team up with online if your on the same system(s)

It has plenty of benefits if you can manage the part of going out at midnight same thing with Midnight movie times at theatres to see it with people who are not likely "just showing up" not that only true fans show up for 1st or never at all but you're highly unlikely to meet someone who's barely interested in it.

It's 1 in the morning over here. I'm not falling asleep till 5 in the morning. And I have class a few hours after that.

It doesn't matter what my schedule is, even if I have to wake up at six in the morning. I don't sleep at night. I'm nocturnal. Even if I force my sleep schedule to change (I spent a whole month staying awake through days in order to try and get it back on track), it won't change.

If I didn't have this paper to do, I might have even gone to the midnight launch as well.

It's a thing. It can be fun to go out and meet other people who are fans of what you're a fan of, and it's something to do. I remember getting StarCraft II at midnight at the Salem, NH Best Buy. This was mostly because I admit, I had absolutely nothing better to do on a Monday night, or Tuesday night or whatever and it fit right into my summer sleep schedule with plenty of room to spare.
Also, I got a free poster.

As posting this at 2AM demonstrates, midnight is not really a stretch. Though I am much more likely to hang on a midnight release on steam than to go out to the store at midnight. That sounds like too much work.

I'm up all night anyways cause I'm a night owl so I would gladly go to a midnight launch if I wanted a game enough. It just means you get it all the sooner and get to play sooner.

No way I'd get any game at midnight.

It's been ages I got a new game at full price, most of the games I own I got on Steam sales. Way cheaper, I'll have an idea if I'll actually like the game and the devs get a chance to patch it up.

As to ME3, it's tainted by EA, so there is no way I'll ever get it.

Buy online cheaper, chance to get it a day early, not tired when playing and minimal effort required. No, I don't go to a midnight release.

Though HMV didn't do a midnight release for BF3, so when I picked up my pre-order it was 8am and I was in town anyway. But every other release-day game I've bought has been through the internet where I've gotten it either the same day or a day earlier.

I've been going lately because I need to make up for the release of Black Ops.

Free tournament for a copy of the game. Over 60 players. I make it all the way to the last round, a 1v1 match versus this arrogant douchebag, and end up losing.

Now I go to every game release that has a tournament because holy hell do I want to win since I came so close last time. I didn't even have Black Ops preordered nor did I have the money to buy it. I just went for the atmosphere/tourney/fun.

In general though, I don't go to bed until well past 3am, so midnight launches aren't a deal for me.

I have never been to a midnight opening, but I can imagine the atmosphere to have plenty of energy in it. I can understand why people want to gather at midnight, you can be one of the 'OMG! You have to buy this game' people

Because marketing told people it's the right thing to do. Other than that however, if You have midnight launch event it's like mini-con, with loads of freaky people in fancy costumes and often with some additional swag (t-shirts, posters, etc.)

I remember when WoW launched, it wasn't even midnight release,, but since MMOs weren't that popular back then They only had very limited amount of boxes sent out to shops, You had to sign up at least 8 hours before to even be able to buy it, but the shops also gave posters to first buyers. People love to get free stuff.

i can understand getting a game upon release BUT its the fools who wait in line that boggle my mind. There is a walmart next to a gamestop where i live. I went to buy a World of warcraft expansion at midnight at walmart, asked the cashier where the game was, she had them behind the counter, paid and walked out in less that 5 minutes. I drove past the people still in line in the cold rain.

I do it because I just want to get it. Being tired doesn't even enter the equation, seeing as I often stay up for 35+ hours before going to sleep, where I get a max of 4 hours (I'm really getting close to being a true-blue insomniac).

Not everyone has the same sleep schedule and moreover, not everyone feels tired at or around midnight.

And as the above posters have mentioned before, there are people who can easily become "not-tired" as soon as they start playing a game they enjoy. I always end up doing that, so yeah, there are my reasons.

For the same reason sports fans will stay up stupidly late to watch big sporting events, because we love our hobby.

For some of us that love extends to staying up late to get our hands on a game as early as possible, last game midnight release for me was SC2.

I can easily survive on low amounts of sleep for a couple of days in a row so staying up till 1:30-2am on a workday really isn't an issue. However, while I have sat up refreshing Steam at midnight a few times, I've only been to one midnight release, but it was a lot of fun. It was for a World of Warcraft expansion and only one shop was selling it at midnight. There was about 8 of us there for about 1/2 hour and we had a lot of fun alternating between comparing characters and trying to convince the poor woman at the sales desk to sell it to us early.

Because it actually fits in better with my scheduleI, have uni or training or something on most days stopping me from getting down to my local shops, this actually makes it easier. Plus somethings I don't want to wait for.

Because Steam. I can sit at home, in a good comfortable chair, sipping some red wine while listening to some music while seeing the game that I downloaded a few days ago being ready to play as soon as the game is officially released. Yeah, why would I not play it at midnight?
