I believe this statement answers your question good sir.

Seriously. Humans are strange, irrational creatures that tend not to make any sense whatsoever. That's pretty much the best explanation you can give for almost any piece of behaviour by a human.

I don't know if someone else said this, (because there's A LOT of text up there) but I always thought it was mental association that caused fetish. Like, someone was sexually stimulated while in the presence of/thinking about/etc something, and mentally, they associated that with sexual arousal. Humans have probably the most sophisticated brains around, (though I'm no anthropologist, so I can't be certain) so I think that a psychological association could interfere with a base instinct like sexual attraction.

The brain is a complicated instrument, and it's sexual preferences are certainly a part of that complexity. The smallest things can affect how a persons views the opposite sex, from chemical changes to exterior events.

Well, I would put forth some psychological theories about paraphilias, but every time I do so, I'm accused of being intolerant.

So rather than be accused of biggotry because I had the audacity to agree with the American Psychiatric Association, I'll just suggest you read up on modern theories rather than send out a call to everyone with a fetish to explain why their behavior isn't odd.
