6GB sound about the size of the entire game. You sure you installed it from the disk? I had this back in the day with the orange box. Instead of my computer understanding that there was a physical meduim with all the data inside, it proceeded to download every last byte from the web.
So make sure you install from the disk. If there's still a 6gb download after that, then it's indeed strange.

It's the patches, Shogun 2 have had some massive updates since release. Also make sure you did install the game from disc, you shouldn't have to download it with any game.

Sudden unexpected bug patches and what not. Most games now a days have a patch as soon as them come out, although 6 gigs is excessive for a day one patch. Did you just start playing it now? Because the period of time between release and current day with a physical medium platform might explain how you got a backlog of patches.
