practice is all it takes. Whether It's a few weeks practice to a few month's, you will get the hang of it eventually. Also, as Golem239 suggested, scout around the maps looking for the best spots.
If you're talking about fighting games, my tip would be to give up. There are people out there who literally study the frames of animation down to the second. I simply cannot compete with that, and unless you are willing to do the same, you won't be able to either. Shooters, well:
Worked for me. It slows the game down enough that you can watch other people and learn their tactics and little tricks. It teaches you to be patient and watch for an openning, as apposed to running around hoping you're faster on the trigger than the person right around the corner. Once you think you learned enough, then try playing as something else.
