I'm a musical fan, and so are quite a few of my friends, but i've found that very few of my friends who are male actually like musicals. Even though there are some out there that aren't hugely girly (such as Sweeney Todd and Repo! The Genetic Opera)
So I was just wondering why guys don't like musicals.

Cause it ain't manly enough!

Eh, it's also just personal taste. Personally, I quite like a few musicals, like Chicago. Sweeney Todd was really bad though; the blood was far too tomato-sauce-looking and it was rather... well, it wasn't that good in my opinion.

Hey, I'm a guy and I love The Phantom of the Opera. I'm a sucker for that one. Gerard Butler is one sexy beast. It's a shame that some guys don't like musicals.

Edit: We should learn to respect this genre.

I don't know. I love the Disney musicals (no, not the high school ones. Perish the thought). But I suppose we men aren't really that interested in song as a means to convey plot points and emotions. We prefer explosions after all.

I absolutely love Mamma Mia and a bit of Grease :D And obviously it goes without saying that the Rocky Horror Show, well, rocks.

I love all musicals to some extent, becuase there incredibly awesome and manly. Most men simply aren't secure enough to watch and experiences their awesomeness.

I'm a guy and I love musicals! It's a shame so many guys don't, I mean, there are some really good ones out there (personally I'm an Andrew Lloyd Webber fanboy myself), and as you say, there are ones like Sweeney Todd and whatnot that aren't exactly girly. I have to admit, my favourite is probably The Phantom Of The Opera (in fact, I really want to see the current run of Love Never Dies in the WEst End, partly because of a relatively silly crush on Niamh Perry who has a minor role in it), but there are some other really good stuff out there too. And I really need to set aside some Dr. Horrible time soon, I haven't seen it yet and I really need to get around to that...

I wouldn't mind musicals so much if most of them weren't stories that disinterest me set to music that makes me consider hammering knitting needles through my eardrums.

It may be because they run around singing and dancing. People just burst into song randomly. I mean, I'm a girl and even I consider that kind of...eh. It's usually quite exaggerated and over the top, and many musicals have some kind of romance subplot. I'm not surprised that most guys don't like them, or pretend not to.

I do believe "liking musical opera" is slang from "being gay", even now.
That might be enough to drive some (insecure) dudes away.

Little shop, Little shop O' Horrors, Bop-shuwop, Little Shop O' Terrors...
Sorry about that. I like musicals and I'm male.
I think.

I like "O Brother Where Art Thou" I guess not a musical in the purest sense, but people do seem to start singing at the drop of a hat and everyone seems to know the words even though they've never sang together before.

Oh and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I mean come on.

Edit: Wait a second, Does the South Park movie count?

my problem with musicals is that, since the entire plot (or at least very large portions of the plot) are set to different musical pieces, there's a damn good chance there'll be some song that I absolutely hate, either because it's not my genre or it's just too slow.

and, with me not being much of a gambler, I prefer to spend my theater money on the tried and tested genres of comedy and action.

Generally because I don't like the style of music that comes with it. At all. That said, I do like a lot of disney films, which could be considered musicals.

Yeah, if that counts then I'll take it. The soundtrack to that film is awesome.

Good question, and sadly it is one i cannot answer. I just don't like musicals. Perhaps if they had more explosions...

I'm not exactly sure, but I, for one, am very disappointed that my husband doesn't like them. I think it has something to do with how unrealistic it is to have people break out in song and start dancing in the middle of the street. Maybe.

I can't take anything serious where people start singing and dancing synchronised choreographies every five minutes.
